what were they doing to jeff in the mental hospital?

i have always wondered what they were doing to him. we see him getting something shoved up his nose and liquid being poured into it. wtf?!

Sometimes when patients refuse to eat, a naso-gastric tube is inserted up the nose (naso-) and down to the stomach (-gastric) so that the patient can be fed at least a liquid diet. The scene itself is in homage to an identical scene in the 1960's documentary "Titicut Follies" by Frederick Wiseman.

lol how pointless is that? Not the method, but why include it in the movie if you're not going to use it for anything.

I think they showed this to show the audience just HOW mentally ill he was.
He wouldn't even eat by himself; so it added more confusion to the viewer of what was real and what was not. Like, was Jeff really seeing things or was he just crazy?
