This movie actually had an uneasy atmosphere.

Don't know what it is about this movie, but it freaks me out as much as the Exorcist bothered me. And I've watched crap like Cannibal Holocaust and didn't bother me as much as Book of Shadows. Something odd about how it was filmed that makes me like it. And the performances weren't that bad in this.

To this day, I have still only a small selection of films that have matched or topped this film in terms of pure atmosphere. The eerie visuals (the "paper snow" scene and that gorgeous final area shot of the forest are amongst my favorites) and Burwell's score do a great service to the movie's aesthetic appeal, and the fact that it's also a sharply-written (if not always sharply-acted) social satire is the icing on the cake.

It's possible that you saw the documentary Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills and forgot? Joe Berlinger made both of these, and used almost identical methods in shooting and music to create the same eerie morbid atmosphere in both. Considering the gruesome nature of the documentary, i would have got a creeped out vibe from it too. I had recently watched the documentary before this however and was moreso thinking, why does this remind me of paradise lost?

This is one of those severely underrated films. And it was mismarketed, IMO. It was great for what it was and I was so glad it did not follow the straight up "found footage" format of the first one.

this is really underrated. It's so wild and it's eerie, and creative and exciting and entertaining and original. I can't believe it was nominated for worst picture at the golden raspberry awards.

I agree. I saw this movie as a teenager, 15 years ago and I still say it's very creepy. I think it's all the subliminal messages and images that lend an uneasy feeling. Even thinking about it now, gives me the creeps.

As for how flawed and screwed up the final cut ended up being BW 2 wasn't bad at all in some ways. The atmosphere is wonderful dark and evil. Plus the ending while very screwed up is one of the great evil endings in horror. Plus it's a must for Halloween time for me It just captures the fall/halloween spirit perfectly.

Hope we get a proper director's cut one of these days because if it went like the director intended it could have been much more freakier and scarier.

I agree with this 100%. There is a distinct and completely unnerving atmosphere in this movie from beginning to end. It gets more and more pervasive to the point of having a chokehold on the viewer up to the twisted ending. I've been an ardent supporter of this film for years and have never understood the backlash against it. Not a perfect film, but an extremely creepy one. The first 30-40 minutes are downright creepy, and it gets even weirder in the last half.

Excellent post, Robert_Lovelace.
I agree 100%.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?

I enjoyed the mind*beep* of how the movie messes with it's characters. Nice spooky atmosphere. It's not a masterpiece but it's still entertaining. The overhead shot of the Forest at the end and "Haunted" by Poe give me an eerie feeling of loss.
