The above poster is right. They were giving him an intravenous feeding of special liquid food. They often do this in psychiatric or even regular hospitals, if the patient can't or won't eat regular food.
"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus." "Didn't he discover America?" "Penfold, shush."
NG tubes( nasogastric tubes) cause less adverse effects such as gagging than orogastric tubes do. Neither is pleasant though. I had an NG tube for a test and had to wear it for a day. Not the most comfortable thing.
"Titicut Follies (1967) The scene where the doctor inserts the NG tube into Jeff's nose and pours a liquid into the funnel while smoking a cigarette is copied from this documentary."
I have seen this documentary and it is a very disturbing look at life inside a mental institution. They do feed them with tubes in this documentary.
Having an NG tube doesn't hurt but isn't nice. It can make you gag as its going down your throat and they lube it with KY Jelly so you end up tasting it for a while. Its also used to give oral medication as well as liquid feed and to remove fluid stomach contents if necessary.
