Main Character redeeming qualities.

The problem with this heist movie is that there isn’t really anything to justify Nick stealing the sceptre. We’re meant to root for him, but we don’t really have any reason to do so.

Usually in a heist movie the protagonist would be either stealing from someone far more evil so screwing them over would actually be relatively good, or they are stuck in a sticky situation and must help out a loved one. I wouldn’t class Max into this category because he’s really just a criminal who spends a lot of money and is just a business partner to Nick. I really have no sympathy for Max. He looks like a slob who just lives in excess.

Nick’s girlfriend also does not fit into this category because doing the heist does her no benefit.

There’s no Robin Hood theme like stealing from the rich and giving to the poor either. Nick is just a life-long criminal who steals public artifacts for his own personal gain and he’s made a steady living off of it. I don’t see any reason why we should be cheering for him. Perhaps we want to see him go back to his girlfriend in one piece? Well in that case he should just decline the job.

That’s what ruined the movie for me. I have no reason to cheer for Nick.

Well what are the use of my brains if I'm tied up with a dumb cluck like you?

yeah but on the other hand you have nothing to hate him for, he's stealing a french national treasure, so it belongs to no one. actually right wing americans would find it a patriotic act to steal from the frogs.
