Huh, according to the Frequently Asked Questions,

Marlon Brando refused to smile in his last scene in the movie, so his ever-so-slight smile was added in CGI.

Interesting... I wonder why he refused?

Probably just to be difficult again. He and Frank Oz didn't see eye to eye during the making of the film.

There were many things that Mr. Brando was even greater at being than an actor. Unfortunately, decorum prevents us from using those terms on this board.

What I had in mind was boxing the compass.

According to the biography about Deniro and the making of this movie, eventually Brando would not move forward with his scenes unless Oz left and went to a room to watch. Brando was an ass to Oz.
