Yeah, sure, I get that vibe as well, but purely because of some similarities in the cinematography plus the lead actress. I wouldn't really put much into it, as Kieslowski's film is much more serious and better shot than this film, which has a much more surrealistic and eccentric feel.

I actually just watched Maelstrom finally for the first time and the first other film that came to mind, while watching it, in terms of similarity is Three Colors: Blue. They are two different ideas though and I think they're stylized in their own ways. I would guess that Villeneuve saw Three Colors before making Maelstrom and he was inspired/influenced to a moderate, maybe somewhat strong, extent. The sotry centered around a young lady who has soem sort of dramatic issues. Maelstrom is Villeneuve's first legit feature, but since then he has definitely gotten better and is currently in his prime, still at a younger age. Villeneuve has been making masterpiece after masterpiece and it's no surprise that he likely looked up to the real masters who came before him. I think Three Colors: Blue is the better film, put simply, it was made by a master in his prime. Any serious filmmaker would have seen such a film. Although this may be wrong, I would be surprised if it were.

That’s funny, I also got a Trois couleurs vibe, but for me it was much more rouge.
