why the tunnels under the house make no sense

How did people not know about them? Someone had to build it. Maybe they were there from previous owners. Or Mr. and Mrs. Myers were home improvement enthusiasts. Or hired multiple workers and kept switching them out.

Also. The very existence of those tunnels suggest: A: Mr. and Mrs. Myers were crazy abusive toward Michael. 2: They, like Loomis, knew they were dealing with evil, and tried to keep it locked away. Or a combination of both. But none of those allow for as to why he would've been allowed to just wander around in the opening of the original.

Technically, being Illnois, a lot of houses have basements and such. Granted, not a tunnel system like this, but much like Halloween 5's major house upgrade it served movie purposes and was acceptable. Suspension of disbelief for better chase scenes and more tension. Fair trade. I mean honestly, having a rapper and a model as your lead roles and a webcam fad, for the 8th film in the franchise? Tunnels aren't a big deal compared to that.

It's you. The tunnels in 6 were from Smith's Grove, well lit, metal piping, etc. gates but no spikes. These were much cruder.
