THIS is the official (as we stand) ending to the original "Halloween" movie series....and it is just NOT good enough!
Whether you love the H1, H2, H20, HR timeline or the alternative H1, H2, H4, H5, H6 (then maybe into H20, HR) timeline (AND if we disregard the abominations that were the Zombie remakes - as us TRUE H fans DO!)... we are left with nothing but a series unended and unforetold! NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!!
Shame on the writers and indeed producers - (original) Michael Myers LIVES (as of the end of HR).... and his story deserves to be told and completed...
At least Resurrection had a decent Michael, JLC as Laurie, albeit briefly, a great score. He never spoke, growled (only moaned), was never unmasked, donned a coat, etc. Halloween II Rob Zombie style was utter garbage and the only saving grace was Danielle Harris and for me, Angela Trimbur as eye candy. Otherwise crap. Res. wasn't *much* better, but for the 8th installment with it's 2 biggest stars, JLC except the first 20 mins. and no Pleasence/Loomis, to rely on a bunch of hip and not great actors, what did you expect? Rob's picks were his buddies. His own wife, who was really dead in the first film. So that's points off there. He did well with the first Halloween he did, adding his style and classic homages. The second one he didn't care about and it showed. It's taken this long to just get another started. No other Halloween film tanked the franchise for this long a dry spell.

So your argument is essentially "waaaah Zombie did something new! BURN HIM AT THE STAKE!"
Bitching about a coat? Really? This is why fandom is so annoying.
Michael hasn't been scary since 1981...until Zombie brought him back. Hate on his films all you want for not being the same tired thing over and over. I get it, I really do. But to me-his films are the only interesting ones outside of the "trilogy" of 1,2 and H20. I'll throw Season of the Witch in there too.
To call Zombies RZH2 lazy is to be so biased by nostalgia as to not even try to be objective. You don't have to like what he did, but he made it his own, he wanted his films to be ABOUT something and they were-despite how personally insulted you feel. You don't have to like something to acknowledge it's artistic intent. RZH2 is the only slasher film to get to the ugly core of grief in a way that doesn't have a shiny coat of Hollywood paint on it. It's steeped in symbolism and has a genuine air of tragedy to it. And believe it or not, fans are actually coming around the Zombies take more and more. Peruse fan boards it you don't believe me.
My main problem with this film was that it feels like it was made just to appeal to a particular generation with the constant pop culture references and the desperation to mix in reality TV/the Internet into the plot somehow. I really hate the term "dated" but I feel it applies here. All the other Halloween films have a timeless feel because they didn't depend on the biggest trends of the moment to carry the plot along. I feel that when your film is made just to be trendy and appeal to the young generation of that day, you're ensuring it can only be enjoyed in that place and time. It won't have any sort of longevity.
I think the movie would've been so much better if it was just about a group of friends who decide on a dare to break into the Myers house and spend all Halloween night there. Cut out all the technology/Internet reality show business and you may just have a halfway decent film. I think it really drags down the film and almost gives it a found footage vibe.
But yes, since Michael's eyes open at the end they need to redeem the series after this movie and give it the ultimate ending once and for all.
It was a good ending, H20, but the rest was utter garbage. CGI mask, terrible actors ex. JLC and of course, the whole make it feel like Scream and not Halloween thing. Otherwise, yes, Laurie winning is a fitting end.

Parts of it. I listed the parts I didn't like. The homages, Marion, Janet Leigh and her Psycho car, JLC of course and the ending. But given the endings of the past few films, this was the best high note to go out on. Too bad it didn't stick and Res. was made, which also had good parts, but not good enough and that ending...oy...
