I wish a DVD of this would be released
It was a great movie and I will probably pick up a VHS of it on eBay or something and rip it to my computer for longer term storage, but I really wish they would just put this on DVD.

You can pick up an import DVD on Ebay. That's where i got mine. They are Region 0, which means they will play on any NTSC DVD player.
shareYeah just the other week I bought the DVD off of someone on Ebay.
Its a South Korean import, however yeah it is Region 0 so its good to go.
The only thing I didnt like was that when you play it it defaults to having SK subtitles, but you can go into the options and turn them off.

No it hasn't - that's the 1959 version - not the 2000 version this thread is talking about.
Cheers

One is probably better off ordering the VHS tape. I ordered the DVD via amazon.uk because I am in Germany (PAL colour coding here, NTSC video tape would only be viewable in black-and-white).
The picture quality is poor, since they have compressed all 3 hours on a single DVD-5. There is blocking in scenes with lots of movement or quick brightness changes. But still, I have it :-).
Edited to add: The film is also resized to 4:3 for the DVD (I have a 4:3 set so that's fine for me).
Its on DVD, exclusive to Video Ezy. You could try eBay and ezydvd.com probably have it.
Your local Video Ezy store will have it for sure. It came out around September last year
Yes i agree, i have a copy of this and it is NOT bad quality, it is Not grainy it is perfectly clear, and if you only have a NTSC machine, it makes no difference as it is the TV set that displays the picture, most TV's in Australia are NTSC and PAL so there is no problem as well as being multi region, i have many region 1 dvds from the states and play them with no problem here in Australia
shareWell, it seems that there have been two releases, one for the US market and one for Australia. There have been comments about the poor quality of the US release on amazon.com as well. But I haven't been able to locate any other release than that offered on Amazon, so I will have to put up with what I have... (Videoezydvd.com.au has it only for rental, "no retail details available").
Edit: Just discussed the quality with a friend. Might be only the viewers using a TFT screen/computer monitor that experience the blocking. He said, that on his standard tube the quality was o.k.
Hello,
is the german language on the dvd?
is it in german too?
Thanks ...
(already answered to ToSp in PM, but repeated for everyone interested)
No, the DVD is mono-lingual (only in English, not even english subtitles are available). I had no problems to understand most of what was being said by the Brits and Aussies, though. The worst dialect was being used by Armand Assante (I'd liken it to some Northern German Fishermans' dialect ;-), I had to rewind and re-listen on a number of occasions - and still haven't figured out two or three dialogue pieces).
Hello,
and the dvd is uncensored? (uncutted)
Cause in German-TV the movie was cutted...
Thanx
Hi, ToSp,
yes, the DVD is uncut. At least as far as I know. The first time the film was shown on German TV in 2001, it was uncut, too. For later broadcasts, some of the Anchorage footage has been shortened.

If you've got your memory of the last [film I did], the next time you go, "Is that him?"(R. Crowe)

I just found this excellent remake tonight at Walmart for $5.50. Been looking for it for a while.
Assante is an interesting choice as the Peck character in the original, and the rest of the cast is good, as well.
its about 5 bucks its the 2000 version.
well worth the money i had never seen it so i figured for 5 bucks i cant go wrong

Is there anywhere that you can purchase this DVD in Australia, or is it only online?
"How's the serenity?"
"Is there anywhere that you can purchase this DVD in Australia, or is it only online?"
It's only available only for Rent in Australia. It's released by Video Ezy, so it's only available at a Video Ezy!
I paid $3 for it a Wal-mart a couple a weeks ago.

Region 2, superb picture and sound, none of this grainy business reported on the R1 release
Yay! I am considering to buy the R2 release as well, since the US release *is* grainy and has blocking (by now I suspect it has to do with the US DVD being produced for NTSC (as opposed to PAL with a higher solution), because it is OK on tube TV, but a pain on LCD screens).
It has been available in Europe at the Amazons since March 2006 :-).
