More of a 1994 feel....
It struck me how this movie had more of a 1993-1994 feel to it than 2000. Did anyone else feel this way? Perhaps it was written in the early '90's?

I dont know about 94... id still consider that the early 90s, the end of the early 90s, but definitely the early 90s. Haha I know this isnt too far of a stretch but I would say 95-97 would fit much better with this movie. There was a bit of a post-grunge feel to the movie with Biggs and Suvari, and Biggs roommates kinda seemed like the typical mid 90s bunch who went to the NYC dance clubs and listened to 90s dance music (ala Night at Roxbury). I do agree though, it definitely did not feel like a movie for 2000, more like a 90s movie.

This definitely has more of a mid-90's feel in general. Everything was so much meaner and darker in the 90's , compared to more of the "can-do" attitude that's dominated the last decade, especially since 9/11.
Just check out movies like SFW, Fear, or even To Die For to capture the typical depressing and heartless state of people at the time.
I'd much rather live in an optimistic era, but everything goes around in circles so who knows, maybe the next decade might be a return to 90's self destructiveness...
Well you could say it technically is a 90's movie, since the majority of the movie was filmed in the 90's (3 November 1999 - 18 January 2000), which means it was written in the 90's. It just didn't come out in the 90's.
I think the 1995 to 1997 feel is about right, and might have been indeed written around that time. It isn't too uncommon for a script to exist for a few years waiting to be green lighted, and then with casting and everything it is very likely this movie was written in 1997 or earlier.

Well, in my opinion from 2000 until about 2005 or so, I still felt like I was in the 90s. =P
shareAt the time, I thought most of the 00's were a repeat of the late 90's. Looking back, however, there are a lot of differences.
shareTBH I didn't see much difference in fashion and attitude wise with the early-mid 2000S from the mid-late 90s.
