I think we all would have liked a young Shatner, Nimoy, et al, but time catches up with everyone. Shatner, Nimoy, Kelley, were approaching 60 by the late 80s - it was time to move on.

I was about 30 when Next Gen was first aired, and had grown up watching Star Trek reruns hundreds of times on WPIX NY as a kid, so I would have been a prime person to hate a new crew, but I (and my brothers and friends) gave it a shot and surprised ourselves by really liking it. Your dad might have as well if he gave it a chance.

Forgetting that though, Next Gen wasn't a show created by Stewart, he was simply hired as the actor to play the captain. If it wasn't Stewart, it would have been someone else.
