1999 THOUGH BRITISH FLAVORED NOT LIKE FIRST FULL MOVIE CLASSIC

Very diappointed in this remake of a CLASSIC! Patrick Stewart did a fine acting job as Scrooge, the rest of cast fair. More like the novel I believe. HOW MANY REMAKES GEE WHIZ! If remakes can't stand toe to toe on award caliber like the originals, why make them? An example, a holiday film like, "It's A Wonderful Life," captures oscar winning directing, acting performances. The 1951 remake by Brian Desmond Hurst, aka Scrooge is considered one of the best versions.. This one... Bah Humbug!

GEE WHIZ!

"It's A Wonderful Life" won no oscars.

Which Christmas Carol are you calling "the original", because there was a 1910s one, a 30s one, a 50s one, George C. Scott's, etc? Too many to count and I doubt either won an Oscar, but I could be wrong.

reply

most of the older christmas carols were poorly made, I think.

I was also disappointed. Surprisingly so, because I LOVE Patrick Stewart's one-man, audiobook reading of A Christmas Carol...

The best christmas carol remake was EASILY the muppets!

Clearly you've never seen the Alastair Sim version (1951 I think). His portrayal of Scrooge was quite brilliant and unlikely to be surpassed! However this is one film where I like to see remakes, just to see different interpretations and character portrayals. I think its probably Dickens' best story so I enjoy almost all versions(except the Muppets which isn't very Dickensian is it?).

Merry Xmas

George C. Scott version is outstanding. This may be my second favorite version, I enjoy both immensely.

reply

Wasn't the original by a Mr Charles Dickens?

reply

Nothing beats the Mr. Magoo version.

I actually love this version with Patrick Stewart so much that I own it on DVD. Each year, my kid's and I kick off the holiday season by watching it on Thanksgiving weekend.

Love the other versions too - we try to see nearly all of them each year.

What a great story.

What do you mean by "remake"? What is the original? They are ALL adaptations. Script writers make choices, as do producers and directors. If you put them all in in a blender, you might get something that you think is "perfect", but someone else would hate.
