Of course we all felt bad for Tiny Tim but....

...I had a little harder time feeling bad for the parents. If they were so freaking poor, why the heck did they have SO MANY CHILDREN?!
And the small, kind kids have to work! Its one thing for a teenager to work and help out, and I know there were no child labor laws then but....
the parents should have been ashamed to make their kids work. Its THEIR job to take care of their own kids.

Many couples had several children during that time because of high infant mortality rates. Many children died young due to diseases doctors did not yet know how to treat and prevent. Having as many children as possible increased the chances of at least one of them surviving to adulthood.

You are taking current ideology and trying to apply it on history, which never works.
