I was pondering what it would be like if an rated-R version were made. Would that just be silly or would it work? Like throw in lots of swearing. Can probably have some nudity somehow, like in the future one of the Cratchit girls has to be a prostitute or something. Make the Christmas-future ghost really really scary. Think so?
Hmm, a serious, hard-edged take on A Christmas Carol. I think that as long as you don't tamper with the story too much, it might could actually work! It's a compelling idea. But one thing I think is key: If you're going to darken the tone of the story, then you'll have to find a way to make sure to retain the happy, joyous, bright core of the story and convey this to the viewer.
People forget that Dickens' style was in the realm of caricature. The grim elements were presented in a way that held some truth but were larger than life enough to take the edge off a little.
I honestly don't know who the story could be made more "adult". I've seen many modernised version of the story which aim for more realism and they all fall completely flat. It just doesn't work in my opinion.
you could probably easily make it "R" by showing Victorian London as it really was ie the sad poor people dying on the streets (which is sort or shown in this version), the pimps & prostitutes etc
Probably the closest thing to that is Scrooged with Bill Murray except it's PG-13. But it is still filled with some sexual content and swearing that wouldn't appear in any other adaptation of the story.
