If Malena didn't like the attention or gossip...

why was she doing such things to call so much attention to herself, i.e. cutting and dying her hair, dressing to the nines and in white when going out? If I was a beautiful woman, which I'm not, lol, so I could be way off here, but if I was and I wasn't appreciating the attention I was receiving from the townsfolk, I would try to assimilate my looks, not dress opposite everyone else. When she's walking through the town in white, I mean, she was the only one in the town in white! Everyone else was in drab earth-tones. That's the first thing you can do. Secondly don't wear clothing that shows your slip/seems. And third, don't look like you spent two hours in front of a mirror before leaving your house unless you want attention. Any thoughts?

I know she and her family did not have a lot of money, but I feel she and her dad should have moved. If I was Malena and her husband I would not come back to that cruel village. That is sad her dad got killed.

Malena in no way brought what happened on herself. If a woman can't make an effort to look nice without being gossiped about and persecuted by the people around her that is their fault, not hers.

She never especially minded being admired, it was the persecution she received that she objected to. Let's make an analogy. A girl at school is bullied at school for being a bookworm and a loner. Would you say "If she doesn't want to be bullied she should stop so openly reading books and hanging out by herself. She should give them reasons not to bully her. She brought in on herself". This is clearly ridiculous. She didn't do anything wrong, she shouldn't have to change herself and the bullies would most likely continue to bully her no matter what she did. Nasty people like the people in the village are going to gossip, discriminate and think the worst no matter what you say or do. So Malena is blameless.

Thank you.

Let's say she actually did try to - unnecessarily - appease them by looking less glamorous, chances are she would still attract attention with that beautiful body. And face.

The fact of the matter is these were terrible people who couldn't mind their own business. Even IF Malèna enjoyed all the attention she received, that's still not a good enough reason for all the nasty lies that were spread.

You want something corny? You got it!
