Could she have suffered the same fate if she was a bit more friendly?

In the movie, one of the villagers said that Malena acts more superior than them. Is it because Malena just live her day minding her own business and not stopping by greeting and having a chat with the other women? Because in the movie she seems a bit snobbish if not approached and talked to. Could she have been still the bad talk of the town if she has great PR skills?

reply

Of course the movie is not about the PR skills, it's about the curse of beauty.

reply

I know what the movie is about and that's why I'm asking what could have happened if she was more friendly.

reply

Of course friendliness would not help. Beauty is a curse, it's a threat to everyone around. I am sure she would answer nicely if anyone even cared to talk to her, but everyone was treating her as if she were a leper from the very beginning. She was just mortified all through the film, through better times and worse.

perhaps she could have formed friendships with some of the townspeople if she had kept at it but they gave her no chance. those women had already made up their minds that she didn't belong there and if she had been friendly they probably would have just smiled politely but then immediately said things about her once her back was turned

Envy is a terrible thing.

I did not think she was a snob. What makes you think that? I think people shouldn't project themselves over someone who is kind of introvert. And even if she was a snob, does it justify the kind of treatment she got?

reply

being friendly wouldnt help, 1st shes pretty, and if she's being nice it'll widen the chance for men to get closer to her. the other women are the one who should start the friendship, but they wont, not because she's unfriendly but bcz shes pretty. their husband will take the chance if those women make friend with malena, and those women dont want to take the risk. so does malena, she better avoid them, why? bcz she doesnt want to create that possibility to happen.

You mean if she was being a hypocrite like the rest of them? Instead of just being herself.

I come from the similar environment and this movie depicts that kind of mentality perfectly. People who stand out in any way, whether it by their beauty or intelligence (or both) are always ostracized from the rest of the common folk, and then in the same time fingers are being pointed at them for not socializing with others, when no one wants to socialize with them in the first place. It's a vicious circle of hypocritical societies.

Social awkwardness is also usually misinterpreted as arrogance or 'uppity attitude' by those kind of people. They thought she was a snob just because she wouldn't fit in with them and kept to herself.

Every beautiful woman I've ever know had far more male friends than female, if they had any female friends at all. Women HATE women that are more beautiful than them. It doesn't matter what kind of person the beautiful one is. She is a THREAT and must be gotten rid of. They are shunned and gossiped about relentless and called names like 'slut' and 'harlot' and 'whore' and 'bitch', ect. True, most beautiful women I've know were arrogant, manipulative bitches, but they are also lonely and hated and they all know that their beauty is all they have and when it's gone, they are done. It's a blessing and a curse.

reply

Well, it's understandable if most of the beautiful women l you described don't have many female friends: "were arrogant, manipulative bitches" = "lonely and hated"

Being a woman myself, I've known many beautiful women who had female friends (namely other beautiful women) and who overall had great personalities. It's hard at first to approach beautiful/attractive women as friends, especially if they're quiet and to themselves, because it can be intimidating (and stereotypes that she's a bitch/snob). The only ones real issues that arise is when it comes to special attention in any way.

PrimeMinisterOfTheSinister It's a massive generalization to say women hate beautiful women. Some do, but plenty don't. You talk like it was all the women, she was persecuted by the men as well. They didn't want to be friends with her and only judged her on the way she looked and what they heard about her sex life.

reply

I agreed with you until you got to the part about "they all know that their beauty is all they have and when it's gone, they are done." Some know they have more to offer the world, and some might even find relief in no longer being beautiful due to the attention and hatred it brings their way.

reply

You're saying this because she always walk looking at the ground, right? She's not rude. She knows that everyone stares at her. I'm sure some people would enjoy that kind of attention, but she knows that men see her as meat as nothing else.
