the hair cutting-humiliation scene
Cutting the hair of women who were accused of collaboration happened extensively towards the end of WWII, particularly in France but also in Italy, Belgium, Holland. More recently it was used as a punishment in such places as Ireland during The Troubles.
I am wondering what social or psychological forces lie behind this. It's obviously a lynch mob mentality at work, but (as a gay man) I wonder why is cutting a woman's hair considered so humiliating? Is it symbolic in some way?
