WTH? My twelve-year-old friend told me that her mom has been calling Cowboy Bebop and anime "silly" or saying "that stupid cowboy bebop." She also said that her granfather was calling Cowboy Bebop a silly show.
WTF? These people haven't even seen much of Cowboy Bebop so why the hell would they be calling it garbage? I know that somebody tweeted on Twitter while we were watching Cowboy Bebop calling it "The worst cartoon ever" and that just made me angry. I don't really care if people say they don't hate it but dislike it but if they loathe it I'm filled with rage. Cowboy Bebop is one of the BEST cartoon ever and nobody better being calling it bad names towards me or saying it's the worst cartoon ever. That rages me.
Has anyone ever came across someone who called Cowboy Bebop by a bad name saying it's "garbage" or yelling 'it's the worst cartoon ever'?

My thought is (and Yeah, I feel the same way), people who say that maybe watched one session, didn't care for it then start spewing that stuff.
I wasn't that interested in it in the beginning because of the title - I thought "Cowboy Bebop" sounded kind of silly and I didn't take it seriously. I did watch it though and found out that it is ANYTHING but a silly show, garbage or stupid.
But then, there are always going to be people rushing to snap judgements without giving something a chance.
Also, no matter WHAT it is, there are going to be people who hate it. Not everyone is going to love Cowboy Bebop, amazing as that sounds. I know a LOT of people LOVE Lupin III - I disliked it from the start and it got even worse from there, but I gave it 4 or 5 episodes. Everyone I know who's seen it loves it, so maybe it just wasn't my cup of tea, you know? Same with Cowboy Bebop.
Cowboy Bebop is a masterpiece, but not everyone can appreciate a masterpiece, and if they're really obnoxious about it, I just say "F 'em." *shrug*
Nothing you can do about it except maybe pity them I guess.
This reminds me of someone I saw on a forum saying that One Piece was a better series than Cowboy Bebop and that Bebop was "okay, but didn't go for the amazing experience of the Big 3." o_O
It's hard to accept that some people just don't get it or have horrible taste in anime because Bebop is just so good, but I guess that's how it is. :/
Yeah, it has to be either not giving it a chance or personal taste. Of course, I think some people's taste is in their mouths, but that's the way they are. :\
Big 3 = Naruto, Bleach and One Piece unless I'm not mistaken. The major Shonen series that will run until the sun gets too big and the Earth dries up. Entertaining fast food for the brain.
I know more people who love crappy entertainment like Michael Bay's Transformers, than I do people who love deep, heartfelt stuff like Miyazaki films or Bebop. It sucks, but what can you do? My eldest sister HATES anime, and she's never seen anything past the clips of Speed Racer she saw when she was a kid. She tells me it's boring and it really pisses me off because she doesn't give it even a tiny chance. I wish she could hear how close-minded and idiotic she sounds when I'm talking about Cowboy Bebop to my twin sis and she says "Oh my God anime. It's not even ABOUT anything." I really really want to sit her down in front of Baccano! at some point, because I know she'd love it, but she'd probably sit there complaining about how they don't look like real people (yeah no sh*t, Sherlock >_>).
I'm Dexter Morgan. I... can't think of anything clever to say.
NARUTO, BLEACH & OP BETTER THAN BEBOP??? wow. What has the world come to...You can pick any episode from any 3 of those garbage series' Thats like what 1500 episodes? & they couldn't hold a candle to any one of Bebop's 26.
Don't let that stuff get to you, her old gramps probably still hates free love, and that gets in the way of bebop, and her mom is square. Some people walk into anime with intentions of hating it before the credits stop rolling, some people hate Bebop because it is the best anime ever and they want to be diffrent because their mothers didn't give them any attention when they were little.
I have had that done to me before, but these were people who don't even watch Cowboy Bebop, so it doesnt bother me. I'm fine with someone not liking bebop because they don't like bebop, but not "I hate it because it's popular" or "I hate it because anime is dumb." I know I said some mean stuff, but I really don't care

Hey, I liked Transformers! I don't think one should be so quick to judge "entertainment" simply because it's not what Bebop or other "deeper" pieces are. I enjoy entertainment, I enjoy Bebop, I enjoy Lost in Translation, I enjoy most everything. Maybe you didn't intend to come off that way, but that's the way it seemed to me.
When I saw you across a crowded room, I decided not to shoot reply share
Yeah ok, maybe I shouldn't have called it "crappy" per se, hell I kinda like Transformers too since it's fun and just looks so darn shiny. I suppose I just mean movies/shows that don't make you think too much, which isn't a bad thing since by definition entertainment is meant to be enjoyable above all.

Many people dimiss anime for being childish, weird and cheesy, I should know, I was one of them. And it's true, alot of anime, especially the better known shows are aimed at kids, badly translated and the end result is garbage. I won't name any specific shows, because taste is a personal thing, but I think you all know what I'm talking about.
Cowboy Bebop was actually the series that changed my opinion, the animation is fantastic, the music is completely different to my usual style and yet I love it. The characters are interesting, the story engaging and the perfect mix of drama and comedy. Overall it's ultra-sleek, ultra-cool and timeless.
That said, it's not for everyone, nothing is. Don't expect older generations to enjoy it, animation in their eyes is probably WB, Hanna Barbera and Disney. Animation for adults is a very specific audience, that's why you don't see it much anymore beyond basic cable comedy.
Also, there's the cultural difference, it would take alot of convincing to get my parents to watch anything from a foreign country, especially if it were in another language.
Generation Y is a melting pot of culture, so we're all more likely to broaden our cultural horizons.
So much of it IS weird and cheesy, and there is SO much of it. You have to wade through quite a steaming pile to find nuggets of gold like Cowboy Bebop. I think the title prevents people from taking it seriously too. Of course, once one gets through the first five sessions, Ballad of Fallen Angels pretty much erases that perception.
My sister is one who doesn't like animation (unless it's computer animation, like Shreck). I was visiting her a couple years ago and we were trying to decide which movie to watch. I told her we were going to watch the Cowboy Bebop movie I brought with me. It took some convincing, but I told her to just watch the first half hour. If she didn't like it we could watch something else. She was on the edge of her seat, and about halfway through, she said "this isn't what I expected." She loved it. She'd appreciate it more if she watched the series, but she's not interested, and that's fine. She gave it a chance, which is the main thing.
And you're right about people not wanting to see anything from a foreign country. It's like they think that they won't understand it, even with a decent dub - that there will be so many in jokes and cultural references that would make it incomprehensible to anyone from outside that culture, or just afraid to be exposed to another culture's entertainment. That's just sad.
Hey, guys! Thanks for the tip:) I think I might choose one or more specific episode(s) for my friend's mother and her father to watch. This is going to be difficult. We were concerning on this for about a few months now and she said that her mother dislikes violence, language, guns and nudity so I don't think Ballad of Fallen Angels would work. Neither The Real Folk Blues. I'd think she'd LOVE BoFA if she hadn't had this problem with violence compared to her daughter. I wouldn't choose Stray Dog Strut for language. She also doesn't like horror flicks so Toys in the Attic wouldn't work. We promised that we might have her watch something like Brain Scratch or Asteriod Blues (to get a little warmed up.)
Her grandfather doesn't mind violence so he could probably watch ANYTHING from Bebop except for Jupiter Jazz Part I and II
Cowboy Bebop is not specifically aimed at children. It might be O.K. for them if they're comfortable violence or act very mature for their age.
Now, what MrsSpooky mentioned about the animated movie, she said that her and her sister LOVED it. I had to watch the movie with my friend since it was given R and she was too young to watch it. She liked it better than I did. I just thought it was so-so.
Oh and by the way, I don't really mind kiddie anime unless their girly, well, let's except that. I always HATED Hello Kitty and thought Sonic X and the movie it had were better (partly because I'm a major Sonic the Hedgehog fan.) The problem is my friend always dragged me to see these really childish anime such as Magical Meow Meow Taruto. I didn't like it. I thought it was a show for toddlers even if it IS for kids. However, I liked Cardcaptor Sakura and Princess Tutu so I guess educational anime are too tedious for me I guess.

I have meet people who called Cowboy Bebop "boring" which is understandable. I,however, never meet someone who called it "trash."
I guess some people just can't get into the story-telling. Bebop is very episodic and the plot doesn't unify until later episodes. This may be a turn-off for people who enjoy consistent plot-progression anime like Code Geass or Death Note. These types of anime are generally more exciting and keep audiences attentive.
I, however, enjoy Bebop's episodic story-telling. I find each episode very meaningful and they always leave some kind of message or emotion for the viewers. Sometimes irony, bitter-sweet, sad, and even relaxed kind of feeling and that is reason why I enjoy this show.
Cowboy Bebop is episodic, but there is an overarching story/theme that is there for those who have patience to stick it out (if episodic is not their cup of tea and the characters don't grab them).
Cowboy Bebop is very much about life, struggle. It's about struggling with wounds of the past and moving on. It's about struggle with day to day life with its misfortunes and friendship and our too often failure to allow our friends to be there for us and trying to go it alone.
It's sad really. Those who won't give it a chance are missing out on a lot.
Old people do things like that for stuff they don't understand. They didn't have anime back when they were kids, just cartoons. Cartoons were mainly comedy and absurd situations, so when something like anime comes along, something that takes itself seriously and maturely, they don't know how to process it. To them, anything animated is kids stuff so they just don't get it.
On a side note: My 64 year old Mom doesn't like cowboy bebop, but she does like shows like Yugioh, Trigun and Dragonball Z, and she liked movies like Paprika, Waking Life and Akira.
--- No matter how much you love a movie, someone has posted a "worst movie ever" thread about it.
In my teen years I'd hanged out with some friends who watched a lot of so called "mature" anime, and it was horrible, completely
Most anime is generally aimed at teens, but that's ok, I loved "Sen to Chihiro"
Its not the target audience the problem, but the writing style I have problems with cheesy and immature stuff
The ones I love are the ones that are usually had a lot of western style of writing, like: Bebop, Akira, Jin-Roh, Ghost in the shell, etc
Crap like Hellsing I cannot stand
Something similar happened to me watching Kurosawa's movies, I instantly loved Yojimbo, Sanjuro and Rashomon... but Ran, Kagemusha and Seven Samurai were more difficult to enjoy at first
Pretty much all the anime I love is aimed at teens. :) Space Brothers (currently airing in Japan and can be seen in the US and maybe other countries on crunchyroll.com) could be aimed at pre-teen audiences - teen and pre-teen, but the story is VERY good. Good enough to keep THIS old fart engaged. :D
There is some briliant storytelling going on in anime, and whether it's aimed at Western audiences or not, if we're lucky enough to find them, all we can do is enjoy them and tell others, you know?
When my son was about 10 years old, he said "Dad you would like this show called Cowboy Bebop". So, we watched it together and I (40something) found it very entertaining in a "Firefly" sort of way. I plan to watch it again eventually.
*slaps Eatmeshortz* What the heck are you thinking? Letting a son that young watch a freaking adult series, you must be a really bad parent man, for doing that.
You have to be at least 12 to watch it. WAIT TIL HE GETS OLDER YOU freaking mean father.
*beep* I can't believe I saw the news. He really let him watch it? Dammit!
*beep*!!!!
YOU HURT MY FEELINGS. I WAS SO DISGUSTED WHEN I SAW THIS COMMENT. DO YOU HEAR ME? 12!!!! GO *beep* YOURSELF! GOD.
What the heck is with you and parental guidance? You fought over people doing that for Monsters vs. Aliens and it was rated PG! You are so rude.
Cowboy Bebop was aimed at adults but 12 is still a child so how would you feel if somebody said that to you because you think it's okay for a 12 year old? You were lying and disloyal punk for hurting the children. Be respectful on the boards, it's just what the parents think. Please, calm down.
Can you please explain to me exactly how it would hurt the children? It definetly wouldn't hurt the children physically. It also definetly wouldn't hurt the children mentally, it's just a show. I grew up watching horror flicks as a child and I still enjoy them. Even kids know the difference between reality and tv. I turned out all right. Have a decent job, no criminal record, easy time making friends and happy most of the time.
There's absolutely NOTHING to support that for example scary movies or something like that could have ANY ill effects on children. Sure maybe they can get a nightmare but that can happen to an adult as well, you get over it.
A 12 year old will be perfectly fine watching Cowboy bebop, they just wouldn't enjoy it that much I think.
I think that Bebop is rather mediocre, slightly above average maybe. It really doesn't move me, I don't like jazz, I'm not much for the episodic format because there's no overhanging story, no sense of direction. The characters seem very shallow, and the humoristic episodes drain the series of any weight. The red haired kid, Ed or whatever, is a really annoying character too.
I was introduced to Beebop by a close friend of mine, claiming it was the best thing he had ever seen (at the time), & I was skeptical to say the least. However, over they years, several episodes (including the pilot) have really grown on me & I consider them to be among my favorites now. Some episodes I have trouble with (Stray Dog Strut to name one, though mainly because of the music), though this is countered by some episodes being so completely, absurdly entertaining that it evens out (my favorite eps are: 1-Pilot, 4-Gateway Shuffle, 14-Bohemian Rhapsody, & 17-Mushroom Samba).
Another note, one person I know explained it as "either you love anime or you hate it", but now I disagree, each show should be taken on its own merit & not lobbed in with the rest. As time goes on, I find there is a lot of Anime I find to be sub-par, but some of it still shines.
Anime is like any other medium; a lot of crap, some good stuff, and some great pieces. I gravitate towards a lot of anime because I like the risks the writers are willing to take with the themes and stories. I just finished season 1 of the anime Psycho-Pass and liked it okay; it was entertaining, and tried its best to be fresh and original. It didn't always succeed at it, but I give it props for trying.
Meanwhile, I'm also finding classics like Cowboy Bebop, Baccano, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and the 100% unique Kino's Journey (seriously, I've never seen anything like it), and having a blast with them, mainly because no other medium has offered works like these.
Yes, there are a lot of derivative shows... but also many that are special and different, and it's a joy to discover them. Just as in every other medium.
"I want a man with a tattoo on his dick! Have I got that man?"
Well, it's one thing on another board, but to go into the board devoted to the show, where the fans go and do it, that's very d*ckish behavior by any standard.
You know, if one wants to trash Naruto on the Cowboy Bebop board, that's one thing. Go to the Naruto board and do it, that would make one a dink. And I'm being polite so the imdb language police don't complain. xD
That's true, but fans can be obnoxious as well. I mean, God forbid you point out a few flaws of their favorite show and they become very, very rude. Not only that, but they'll resort to personal insults, even though they don't know you. And all that because of a TV show! C'mon... After all, discussion boards are meant for discussion, not just praising the show/movie in question.
*sniff sniff* Why are you saying all these terrible things about me, Spooky?
Yeah, some people get out of hand. Especially when you begin comparing subs to dubs. Heaven forbid you prefer one over the other, because there will always be someone burning you in effigy for it.
Chasing our yesterdays, we sacrifice our tomorrows
Oh yeah, dub vs sub argument! People get SO EMOTIONAL about it, it's actually hilarious. Of course, that's when I turn into a jerk sometimes when someone starts going off about how the English dub of a certain anime is the ONLY version worth listening to/watching.
On a board on another site for another anime, one guy tried to say that that show's English dub was SO AWESOME, the director agreed so when they released a special edition, the Japanese version was set to play the English dub by default. That was just crazy and I felt obligated to troll him. xD That is, if you consider pointing out why that was a ridiculous assertion to be trolling...
I can see why one would not like it overall, as long as they say reasonable arguments about it and not just hating for the sake of hating, misinterpreting completely whatever the series is trying to convey.
"Citizen Kane" fan, "Frozen" fan, and "Boyhood" fan. ;)
