Clearly he's a million miles from being a one-trick hack like Bay, but I don't think Spielberg or indeed anyone could have done much with such a lame and syrupy script.
Spielberg has made great movies and he has made bad ones, and he has made many that are somewhere in between. Like most filmmakers, he is as good as the material he starts out with.
