I think I know the issue with this film
I just finished watching 2046 for the first time in years and I never watched it regularly because the film never really appealed to me. However before I get into what I feel are the negative aspects of the film I would like to point out the positives. First of all the cinematography is excellent and no one can deny that the film is easy on the eyes with great contrast with the colors. I also fell in love with the soundtrack and found it to be a perfect fit. The acting is top notch especially by all the actresses involved and Tony Leung subtlety is astounding.
Now for the negative. I believe the film fails in the most essential aspect of storytelling and that is to entertain. The reason being is because no one is really aware of the main character's past. If you have seen In the Mood for Love you definitely have a leg up and the time may make more sense but I still feel the audience needed to know where Chow was at emotionally at the very beginning of the film. The film briefly mentions way into it that he had a true love at one time but he never elaborates as to why he will not let himself love again. For people who have never seen In the Mood for Love they fail to be emotionally sympathetic with Chow and he just looks like a jerk who uses women. Furthermore the film ends with nothing seemingly accomplished as far as Chow's emotional maturity. Is he forever damaged? Will he ever love again? No real answer is given so the entire film almost feels like a waste of time. If the story had some sort of progression I think a feeling a satisfaction would have permeated and not leave you thinking "OK, what happens?"
Iv'e been watching Kar Wai Wong films for years now and although this is far from his worst (My Blueberry Nights takes that title) it his not his best either. Without a doubt a very talented director and writer.
