So boring!

Oh god this movie was so boring. I don't know what it was about and don't even care.

There are those who have been blessed with a burning gift that allows them to experience the world with a sixth sense... "feeling". Colors and emotions are vivid in a way that most could never imagine.

This film dripped raw emotion from every deliberate and beautiful motion of its character's hands. The film opened a window into the heart of a thoughtful individual in a way that is rarely captured.

Those of you who missed this are frankly, color-blind. There was something fleeting and true that came through on the screen. And you missed it. And you'll always miss it... it is something very base and subtle that most people will never know exists.

And for that I am very sorry.

Actually, the most boring and pointless time that anyone could have in their lives is not watching this film, as claimed repeatedly above, but rather it is reading this thread. I would know, as I have just done so. We are getting a tad childish here.
ha ha
just joking.
Personally I thought the film was sexy, beautiful and sad. It reminded me a lot of a Haruki Murakami novel. And some other Japanese literature. The lead character was as cool as cool can be. Unfortunately I can not get my hands on a DVD copy of In The Mood For Love and it is driving me nuts man! I can only find it on VHS and like, well, as if I still have a video player. VHS has done nothing for me for years. Mega frustration though.

reply

its released on criterion, should be easy to get, check amazon

reply

Well obviously this director has made a name for himself with his previous films. I will have to check those out, because otherwise, 2046 is not a great movie.

I'll admit, certain scenes were engaging and the premise is cool. I felt like it needed more to pull you in to the story, however and even a fan of this movie must admit - it is PAINFULLY slow. This coming from a guy who usually rushes to see movies that people say are "slow."

I'm a bit in the middle here - though I spent the last 40 minutes of the film mainly messing with my laptop, and only glancing at the screen. I will go back and watch the end to see if it pulls me in, but otherwise I was apatient as could be with this film and it was... 'blah, OK.'

BTW folks, the pseudo-intellectual cries of 'you just don't get it then' are so trite. Please refrain from knee-jerking them around the board. Thanks!

reply

calling people pseudo-intellectual is soooo gauche.

but is calling someone gauche pseudo-intellectual?

Don't bother trying to watch it again, I watched it all the way through, because I so badly wanted to like it, but it is awful.

I would not say it is one of the worst movies of all time, but it is vastly overrated. Here are some of the reasons why it is bad.

It is overly setimental: oh, another kissing scene! Oh, another classical piece to accompany. Is it the same tune? Is it the same girl?

Claustrophobic: how much of it did not evoke a sense of pointlessnes, darkness and damp -- nearly all in the same drab pallette.

Incoherent: back and forth in time between women. What is going on?! Who cares, anymore.

Were it not for Li Gong this may well, after all, have been one of the worst movies of all time. She was the only one who displayed any emotion beyond the hopelessness so prevalent everywhere else in this dull dirge.

Agreed. I just finished watching this tonight and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who felt this film failed to live up to the promise. As it progressed I found myself asking how much longer there was left till the end. The premise of the storyline was great but poorly executed. With a few rewrites, this could've been a classic. What I saw was the director's cut, so I wonder how the bad the original version was?

2046 is very disappointing and frustrating so because it had the potential to be so much better. It's the cinematic equivalent of a dream date who looks and sounds superb but has little to offer beneath the surface in terms of substance or depth. It doesn't matter if it's the art-house genre or not, a bad film is a bad film.

reply

If you are still looking for it, its a whole dollar on moviesville.

I've bought from them before and they are authentic dvds and ship relatively fast. Most of their movies are region free, but if they aren't, most dvd player can be made region free.

And how is 2 hours long?

reply

Yeah man, like the Murakami novel Dance, Dance, Dance. The Dolphin hotel being the 2046 room of this film. But nothing seems critically important in this movie (he settles for 2047). I didn't think I liked D,D,D after I closed the book, but I find myself thinking about it a lot over the subsequent months. I wished it had kept with the horror/suspense feeling of the initial encouter with the Sheepman.

Anyway, I haven't finished the film yet but it doesn't seem as authentic as In The Mood For Love so far... unrequited love in 1960's Hong Kong. Still not a "bad" movie by any stretch though.

reply

if u cant find the dvd and u dont mind the quality too much, u can watch In the Mood for Love on Youtube.

reply

Wow, that's pretty smug, stuff your pity and here's hoping that while bent down admiring something very base and subtle by the roadside you'll be too captivated to notice the very large MAC truck of 'plot' bearing down upon you!

The only subtle hand gesture I noticed in the film appeared to be Wong's extended middle finger towards the audience as he tested my patience with this self-indulgent clap-trap.
I liked Chunking Express but this...... ugh....
I realize that there are alot of Cineo's out there that, once they fall for a director, can never accept that director may can make a huge miss-step once in a while (due usually to an over inflated ego resulting from being constantly told what a genius they are), I myself required alot of therapy before I could admit to myself that Steven Spielberg has not made a good movie since '89 (Private Ryan was almost there, his 'remake' Band of Brothers certiantly was, but as a mini-series it doesn't count)

2046 had some nice nuanced performances and patchy bits of intrest but these just don't make up for the fact that a good story is usually more than the sum of it's parts. Boo-hoo he just can't find love no matter how badly he treats women or how attracted he is to detatched unemotional androids (both literal and figurative). Go rent Swingers, The Girl on the Bridge, Amores Perros or Roger Dodger instead.

reply

Wow, that perfectly encapsulated the artistic dilemma of the movie.

Was trying to read all the posts in this thread to reply, but this is the most boring thread ever. Anyway, I loved the movie.

reply

I liked this movie becuase in my opinnion its is beautifully presented but the story is merely OKAY... not the best by any stretch even though I thoroughly enjoyed the movie I can agree why people did not like it.
It isnt a movie for everyone even some WKW fans did not like this one.
I found it funny that Cinematographer Christopher Doyle even commented on how unecessary 2046 was.

"I feel that 2046 is unnecessary, in retrospect. I think probably Wong Kar-Wai realized that somewhere, and that's why it took so long. You do realize that you have basically said what you needed to say, so why say more? I feel that way. I think you have to move on."

I completely agree with him on that but It is a very wonderful movie for those who can bear with a painfully slow movie with a not so great story.

reply

i disagree, the story is very well done, yes it's slow paced but for a good cause, the story isn't that hard to understand at all if you watch the movie again you will definately understand everything.

2046 was my first WKW and i found it amazing i then looked at in the mood for love and found it equally well, then i watched chungking express which was a big dissapointment in my opinion.

one reason why i loved 2046 wasn't exactly for it's gorgeous cinematogrophy but for one of the most poetic WKW film ever made and the reason why alot of people do not get it is because it flips from time to time but when it does that you need to pay attention to the dialogue and see where he is coming from from his standpoint.

i can see why people wouldn't like 2046 but in my opinion it's one of the best movies ever made along with in the mood for love.

reply

I don't think you can take 2046 on its own. It in combination with Days of Being Wild and In the Mood for Love are a single film. 2046 seems to be a comment on the former two films and I think it can only be appreciated as such. I see 2046 as what Tony Leung whispers in the tree at the end of the In the Mood for Love. It is an embodiment of the quote at the end of the previous film. It is merely a collection of refracted memories and WKW creates that collage of memories better than any film maker I know. He captures the things that make memory what it is: the pure, inconsequential details that come back so very vividly when life has long past it by, the changes the mind makes to make things more easy to deal with, the broad red brush that everything is painted with. WKW captures this perfectly and thus is a master.

reply

I can almost reciprocate your feeling that this movie is boring, but it is a masterpiece nevertheless. You can't really watch this film without a double, actually make that a triple, shot of espresso, but when you do, you'll appreciate it for what it is. If you look at the Mona Lisa, she looks like an ugly man, but nevertheless she is a masterpiece. Hopefully you get the point of that analogy.

P.S. I deeply respect the artwork of Da Vinci, so to all the trolls out there, cool it cause I'm not going to respond to your bitchy tirade about how offensive my statement on the Mona Lisa was.

reply

I must be an idiot, because I've been trying to finish this movie for at least 5 times, but every time I just shut it off because it seemed so bland, fake, and monotonous.

I'm no expert on movies but if I were to describe this one, it would be all style no substance. Sure there's a crapload of music video effects, and scenes that are filmed in 5 frames per second (What in the world is the point of that?) I'm at about 1.5 hours into the movie, and I can't say that anything significant has happened yet. I really could care less about all the characters. Tony Leung is a good actor but what pisses me off about his character is the obviously fake smile he has, trying to make himself seem poignant and sad. It's really not the actor's fault, it's just that even he doesn't know what the heck is going on in this piece of trash.

This is coming from someone who LOVED Chungking Express. In that movie, it was really enjoying seeing all the little mundane nuances of characters' lives in the city. It may have been trivial, but it was REAL. 2046 was completely pretentious and tried too hard but fell flat on its face. I also don't think it was the director's fault either. There HAS to have been one guy, who was probably hired in to be the unofficial artistic consultant, who completely messed the whole thing up.

reply

That is the point. 2046's style is totally different from Chungking Express. I think it is more similar to Ashes of Time.

reply

haven't seen either of those (yet), but i did find this, not boring exactly, just, as someone said earlier, pretentious. i spent the entire time appreciating the art of the film, and trying to find some sort of meaning or humanity from the characters - nothing. at least, i could find it in the women. but tony leung really pissed me off here. apart from a mass confusion of amazing images, i took nothing away from this film, and that's where wkw failed for me. he failed to impart whatever wisdom he hoped to pass on (in my opinion - don't hate me).

Really....The Movie Is Not REALLY THAT Hard To Understnad...Just Watch It Twice, Get Yourself A Cup Coffee.....

reply

I have to agree the movie is pretty boring and really goes no where. It was nice looking but thats all.

reply

I disagree.

I went into the movie knowing it would be a bit slow, knowing how "In The Mood for Love" was and what to expect from Kar Wai Wong. So I accepted it and it never bothered me. I just took all the amazing cinematography in and let it all work. And it does. The way Wong sets up shots to me is amazing how he isolates a whole half of the frame and focuses so well on a single character. It really lets you see minute details of facial expressions and emotions.

And I loved the story, I could relate, to this person who tries to re-create the past and really gets nowhere because he has idolized this woman who is really just an image. I don't know, I just think it's a really great film, and people who thought it was slow should have known what they were getting going into the film.

It's like complaining about singing after seeing a musical, IMO.

2046 is one-of-a-kind movie, is pure poetry in motion. If you have problems with that then I think the world most destroy another “patriotic icon” that only feed your selfishness.

Your stupidity only reiterate what you are in essence and what the people of the world see.

reply

Um...yeah...can someone say extremist psycho?

Dear Raulo_Sosa-1,

I am not an American. I'm Chinese/Australian, and a lot of people who didn't like this movie probably are, like me, non-American.

That being said, while this movie may be "pure poetry in motion", you are sitll not addressing the issue of the hopelessly incomprehensible plot. I wasn't dissing the cinematography - it was great. I just found the overall premise of the movie, the story, somewhat lacking. The idea just didn't work for me.

Sorry, can't help putting in my two cents worth.

Hahaha good point. No surprise stupids movies like Pirates 2,Snakes on Plane and Step Up are on top 5 box-office in america.

I agree, it took me three attempts to finish the film and I only just managed to sit through it thanks to Christopher Doyle's beautiful cinematography that gave the eye something to feast on as the story plodded and limped along, he truly could make watching paint dry an entertaining experience, God know this movie is proof of that!

It had some nice nuanced performances and patchy bits of intrest but these just don't make up for the fact that the story is just rubbish. Boo-hoo he just can't find love no matter how badly he treats women or how attracted he is to detatched unemotional androids (both literal and figurative). I really wanted to like this movie because I really like Tony Leung and of course, he and also the other actors are fantastic, but I just didn´t understand the movie (or it seems to me as I didn´t understand it). I´ll give the movie another try, maybe I´ll understand then why the people act the way they do and whatever. (I´m so confused about it all!)

reply

Fraennie, if you don't quite get the plot of the movie, perhaps you should see also In the Mood for Love and also Days of Being Wild, if you haven't done so already. The story of 2046 really has a huge amount of references to these two films, so for those people who haven't watched these previous two films (especially those whose only other experience of Wong's work is Chungking Express as they seem to have the most difficulty with the movie judging from the comments above), then it is quite hard to understand some of the motivations of the characters.

Also, you should read the comments on this movie on here which have those "contains spoilers" warnings, because that way you could see how others have interpreted the characters and the plot and the kind of insights that people who get this movie took from it.

I really enjoyed this film, and think whole-heartedly, without pretension, that this is THE BEST MOVIE ever made. I went to see this movie in the cinema THREE times in total, relishing every single minute of it, and think it's a gift of an experience that I will always treasure. I want to thank WKW and all the actors and the crew for persevering with this project over several years, for believing in this movie enough to see it to the end. Because I'm really and utterly in love with this movie.

You obviously missed the whole idea.
