I rented this because i remember wanting to see it, but i didnt realize it was part of a "trilogy" as everyone else is saying. Should i watch the other previous 2 first???

well i couldnt find either of the other two at my local video store anyway, i just wanted to make sure i wasnt missing out on anything by watching the last movie in the trilogy.
shareIt's not necessary to have seen those earlier films, or any of Wong Kar-wai's films for that matter.
So, yes you can watch this first.
Well, I watched In The Mood For Love and my wife didn't. We felt like that backstory was very beneficial in understanding Tony Leungs character. Yes, his lost love was shown in 2046, but the key to his mindset is the previous movie.
I think he said something along the lines of "...there is one thing I will not let someone borrow..." His heart belongs to 2046, or the time spent with his true love. Obvious to me is the never ending train ride to 2046 in the novel. Kinda like stuck in some purgatory.
Which may also be an allegory for the state of Hong Kong.
I apologize for the random thoughts, but this movie affects me on so many levels.
As to the orginal question, I would say this is one of those films where you will get a lot more by taking it in order.
Mmmm, backstory or would it be fore-story; at any rate I can't agree that Tony's heart belongs to the woman in 2046 (unless your refering to the apartment in In the Mood for Love) rather than the the woman in the sci-fi novel 2046 or the apartment in 2046; certainly room for confusion & misunderstanding.
So I am saying he is referring to the one woman he loved, Mrs. Chan (Su Li-zhen) in ITMFL, as opposed to the many that were a passing infatuation.
As for some people saying this is a trilogy, I hadn't heard that or seen Days of Being Wild yet. What is this idea based on?
It isn't precisely a "trilogy". "2046" is an off-angle tangent from "In the Mood for Love".
Any more than "Fallen Angels" is a sequel to "Chungking Express".
I didnt know that there was a trilogy for this. Whats the third film called?
I watched 2046 first and then watched In The Mood For Love. When I watched ITMFL, there were some scenes that were related to 2046 and I was like 'oh yes, they are connected'.
Sorry, just though I would say that :)
Days of Being Wild is the third. It comes before In the Mood for Love and features Maggie Cheung's character before she is married, it also features Carina Lau's character from 2046 and ties in with her story arch.
shareThanks for the third film :)
shareI'm still confused, I checked up the first two films and they have no sci-fi aspects about them (from what I can tell from their imdb profiles anyway). What's going on there?!
shareThat's because KKW is not just a sci-fi director...? For the love of God I think even classifying 2046 as sci-fi would be a little strange. The guy does relationship stories, and he does them in very interesting, powerful ways. I think it's purely incidental that 2046 has anything like sci-fi elements in it at all.
shareThey are not sci-fi films but romance films. The only sci-fi aspect is Tony Leung's character writes a sci-fi story in 2046 entitled 2046.
Just watch them and you will get it. =)
shareI want to see the other two parts now
The end of Days of Being Wild will be much more satisfying having seen 2046.
Basically, I think In The Mood For Love is made worse by seeing 2046 first, and days of being wild is made much better.
Leslie Cheung in Days of Being Wild is so incredible it's hard to comprehend. Amazing performance.
If you loved 2046 you really should see Days of Being Wild.
my opinion,
3 films are independent. although the characters are connected but the main point about each film are different. anyone can watch any of 3 not orderly.
wong kar wai said in his interview that he thinks in the mood for love is not day of being wild 2.
My opinion is that, order is not necessary, whatever you wanna do
shareOn one of the special features to 2046 Wong Kar Wai said he was developing 2046 first but then stopped to make In The Mood For Love and then basically re-wrote 2046. Anyway, he said in the special feature(I can't remember which) that he thinks people should watch 2046 so that they can go back to find out what make Tony Leung's character the way he is by watching In The Mood For Love.
shareNope, I enjoyed it very much as a stand-alone film.
