The film starts off by saying that in the year 2046 the world is connected by a vast network of trains and every once in a while a train leaves for 2046. Huh? What is 2046? Are the talking about a particular place or time?

In the year 2046, Hong Kong will revert from its capitalist economy back into China with its [supposedly by then still a] Communist dictatorship [a real stretch]. And this movie represents that...by........how?
Is this some kind of symbolic reference to all that eventual political collapse - although with beautiful and creative photography and musical score (even Zbigniew Preisner!) ?
I'm more than just confused.
