Mixed feelings...

Just watched this for the first time. On the one hand, I can immediately see why so many people have fallen in love with this movie. Such a delightful, innocent, feel-good movie, about falling in love and the value of kindness.

Standout moments for me include: Amelie describing the day to the blind man, Amelie leaving the box for the older gentleman to find, the last few minutes especially Amelie and the man riding the bike together.. Also love how detailed the world and the characters were, with so many weird and unique quirks.

That being said, there were several things bag bothered me and that kept me from completely falling in love with the film.
- the sub-plot of Amelie pairing the worker and customer at the coffee shop. At first it was sweet and funny but then he went back to being a creep and the woman went back to being creeped out by him. What was the point?
- the sub-plot with the meek young artsy kid who played second fiddle at the vegetable stand. There was never any climax or resolution.. The boy continues to be meek, the boss continues to be mean, and Amelie continues to prank the boss. Again, what was the point?
- for all the build up to Amelie finally meeting her love interest, they never even exchange dialogue. I'm sure this was purposely done, but why? I didn't quite feel satisfied at this "love story" that never even allowed us to see any dialogue exchanged between them.

So, lovely film with a lot of beautiful elements. But, too many sub-plots that went nowhere, and a rather drawn out climax that wasn't all that satisfying in the end.

Anyone feel the same way? Anyone have any light to shed on the problems I had with the film and what I'm possibly missing/misinterpreting?

I think the subplots are just glimpses into her life . She finds ways to amuse herself or help others out without looking for any credit. You notice there is a lot going on in her mind that she never actually shares wit anyone . There is no best friend or sister or mother/ father she confides in. Her father is there but not in that way. Her little adventures are random but they mean something to the people involved even if they don't all work out.

I thought the way she ended up with her love interest was fine it more about her journey to get there. I do understand it could have ended with them having an actual date instead of in bed but it didn't really take anything away from the movie fore.

I'm sure others might have different opinions but that is how I see it.
