Why is THIS the Friday film everyone suddenly takes seriously?

I posted this in a response, but it was kinda tangent to that thread, so figured I'd make it an actual discussion.

I honestly don't get why this is the movie people started taking this series so seriously with. The dialogue has never been that great, neither has the acting. I actually thought this film had the best ensemble, most characters in the series pretty much only existed to get killed with no development.

And plot holes, well, the franchise started off with a huge plot hole- how exactly did Jason survive drowning and just happen to be there the night his mother was beheaded and not attack then? How does his face completely change several times over the course of a few days (Fridays 2-4)? Plus, when he's a zombie, how does he keep up with people running at full speed?

As for not taking itself seriously, Jason Lives was the first movie to parody itself. Are we really saying there weren't several comical deaths in that film? Smiley face ring a bell?

No, it wasn't the old school 4; but it kept in with a trend started in 6 (which makes sense, because that's the Jason they have in the film). It wasn't the movie to start being ridiculous, 5 had the over the top death scene with the annoying kid and the father who copycatted Jason's killing spree for really no rational reason.

It's a fun movie. It just happened to come out when people stopped having fun with movies and started taking on purist attitudes to boost their egos on internet debates. Honestly, just saying "I'm mad because I'm a fan of the series" doesn't work. A majority of people claiming to be "fans" were the most vocal about how Jason never ran in the series when trailers for the remake came out. He did several times pre-zombification.

Speaking of zombie Jason, I can understand fans of the first four being angry with this movie more than people who say even Jason Goes to Hell was good. They took a freak in the woods slasher and turned it into supernatural horror. It's not like the series has never switched up its concept before. Hell, Jason wasn't even the original antagonist.

On a side note- Jason's running was hardly the remake's biggest problem.

I'm with you oddball_oddity-1 I love the movie.

There's a lot of action, and everyone is running around constantly, but it's not set up well. Most of the action is pretty standard, and not too exciting. Plus, the cheesy humor. Most of the movie just a corny bore. I think it's the worst movie of the series.

It's not as classy. The humor I mean. Some of it is absolutely terrible. I do like it, though, and went INTO it knowing it would be exactly like it turned out.

It's a sad thing that your adventures have ended here

Well put. I'm a fan of slasher films and I personally like it when a slasher series changes things up because by the natural slasher formula things get heavily repetitive. I like it when a series has so many sequels that they end up in space. Though I do wish it was more like Hellraiser: Bloodline. Pinhead in space!!!!!

It had a lot better character development, but I think Jason X did a decent job making me care about 4 of the core characters. Care enough that I didn't want them to die. I never really felt that in the other Jason movies.

Overall though I like how you say 'why are people taking this one so seriously' was a great way of putting it. It's not like Jason was ever an oscar winner or ever had aspirations to be one. I do think the internet has turned everyone into elitists.

Probably some fans didnt like the irreverent approach taken with the material. This film is almost a lampoon of previous FTT films. Personally I really liked this installment a lot. I found it to be entertaining, fun, silly and humorous.

I'm a huge fan of old school Jason, Part 2's sackhead Jason being my personal favorite. Nonetheless I enjoyed Jason X and thought it was energetic, entertaining and crafty at times, and I did feel for the characters more than usual. The only film in the series I loathe is the headache-inducing (and nearly Jason-less) Jason Goes To Hell, in which the only character I didn't pray would die ASAP was John D. Lemay's character.

That's not a plot hole, given that it's never established that that happened at all. Ginny's drunken "What if?" theory at the bar doesn't establish anything.
How does his face completely change several times over the course of a few days (Fridays 2-4)?
Three different Jason actors and three different makeup effects crews.
Plus, when he's a zombie
Jason is never a "zombie". He's not a cannibal, he's far from mindless, and being shot in the head doesn't affect him in the least (see Part 6). On top of that, he has superhuman strength.
how does he keep up with people running at full speed?
That's a myth, kind of like people thinking "Beam me up, Scottie" is a real quote from Star Trek. Give me an example of Jason walking, and catching or keeping up with someone who is running at full speed, while they are still running at full speed. He catches them when they have stopped running, either due to falling, getting into a vehicle, going into a building, etc. In some cases he has simply thrown a sharp object at them as they are running away.

I don't dance, tell jokes or wear my pants too tight, but I do know about a thousand songs.

Good point about the running away myth. I’m sure it’s happened in some franchise or other but I blame Cracked online and now YouTube videos that endlessly cherry-pick and flat out make shit up facts to form a kind of pop culture census. They take jokes about pop culture and try to make it literal.

I only just watched it because when it came out everyone I know ran away from the cringey desperation of the “in space” idea. Little did I know it’s a self-parody of Jason on the USS Enterprise!

When it came out it seemed like a massive jump the shark moment. Jason Goes to Hell may suck but that was hyped up a lot and the theater was full with a lot of reactions from the crowd.
