What is the memento in Memento?

The movie is called "Memento" and not "Mementos," which is interesting because there are many mementos (at least I think) that Lenny uses, such as his tattoos, polaroids, and notes. However, I'm sure Christopher Nolan - being the deep guy he is - named the movie for a more deeper, more significant reason. One person said that Memento is "remember" in Latin, but I can't find the deep connection here. Any ideas on what exactly functions as the memento in this movie?

It's actually part of Latin phrase "Memento mori" - "remember that you will die.". This is the title of Jonathan Nolan's short story that the movie is loosely based on. "Memento" in the English sense of the word does not apply here.

Oh, and posting the same message every few minutes in a row doesn't make you any more certain to be heard and answered, only more annoying.

Sorry, I didn't realize I was doing that. It kept asking me to resubmit a form every time I was refreshing the page, which is probably why it reposted. Thank you for your reply!

That's not correct. the Memento is the memory of his wife fed by the book, hairbrush, teddy bear collection. He creates this memory of her still being with him. But, it is a lie.
