Why does Teddy talk with Leonard over the phone about Sammy?

In the B&W scenes, it seems the main intent of the phone call is to get Leonard to talk about Sammy. Yeah, I know that the conversation also leads to them meeting up, but is he just having him tell the story again to see if he continues to tell the fabricated version? Or is there something more to it?

I know it helps us as audience members to get exposition to Sammy's story (or at least the version that Leonard tells), but within the film itself I don't really see the leap.

Well, whoever who knows about Sammy is presumably someone Lenny talked to previously. So mentioning Sammy is a way to get some degree of trust from Lenny. And then Lenny's only glad to spill the whole story, it's his trigger acquired by conditioning.

Gotcha. Makes some sense, as he's rather fidgety when he picks up the phone on both occasions.
