Anyone with such severe memory loss would be in an institution
They would not be driving a car, or trying to solve a murder. He would be a threat to himself.

shareHe *was* in an institution (the short shot when Sammy Jankis transforms into Lenny himself is not his imagination but rather a glimpse of real memory). In fact, supplemental materials on the movie's official site http://www.otnemem.com/ contain excerpts from his clinical record and mention of his escape.
shareThanks. This is a brain teaser of a movie. Hard to follow.
Not as bad as the David Lynch movie, Inland Empire, but similar.
What are the black-and-white sequences about? Are they the ones in chronological sequence?
shareYes, they are. The black-and-white sequence is mostly Lenny giving an exposition, but at the end of it Teddy (it's him on the other end of the line) plants him hints about Jimmy Grantz being the man he's searching for, thus triggering the events of the main, reversed, storyline.
shareThanks again. This movie was skewed by remembering Steve Toboloski's role in Mississippi Burning. Quite different.
