Beautiful film

I wish there was more films like this. Surreal and atmospheric. Anyone know of any animation films similar to Angel's Egg?

reply

I think it's one of the best hidden gems from the last 25 years or so. It's very hard to compare other animated films to it. I see very few in American animation. I guess you could say Fantasia because of the visuals, but the plots are nowhere near each other. I have not delved deep into 80s anime films, but you could consider Robot Carnival. I would say it's the Japanese equivalent of Fantasia. Beyond that film I cannot recommend anything. I would also consider the anime series Mushishi.

Thanks, I'll check out Robot Carnival and Mushishi. It's very hard, indeed, to find any other animated films like this. I believe there is quite a lot of interesting and experimental animation out there, but rarely are they made into a feature film like Angel's Egg. They are either short films or just extremely hard to come by.

La Planète sauvage (Fantastic Planet in the UK and USA) is like it at times – primarily the mating ritual, if not much else. I like how it has both anime-like scenes with lots of talking, and very meditative, wordless sequences which are like short films. I'd still recommended that though, along with The Adventures of Prince Achmed and Jirí Trnka's A Midsummer Night's Dream as feature animations with unusual visual styles, of the kind not normally found outside of short films. Piotr Kamler's Chronopolis (on the DVD 'Á la recherche du temps') may be the most similar, but perhaps not the best – it can feel like a short film drawn out to feature length.

Probably the closest you can get to is other Oshii films.

We Are The Strange is very similar, although it is not as well made, and even slower paced.

Check out Yuri Norstein's 'Tale Of Tales'. Available on one of those Masters Of Russian Animation DVDs: amazing and profound...kind of pure art.
Also, don't ignore Miyazaki; Millenium Actress is wonderful, as is Cat Soup. Mind Game, also: even though it's a piece of philosophical fluff, it's beautiful.

Haven't heard of Mind Game, thank you. I own a Complete Works of Yuri Norstein-DVD. I have not seen it yet, but I will. ;)

Although it's not anime, The movie "Mirrormask" would probably appeal to you. The storyline is somewhat similar, about a young girl who manages to cross over from reality to her dream world and finds herself in a large, deserted city that is home to some very bizarre creatures/characters, lots of special effects. Very Surreal and darkly atmospheric.
