Also a very good, yet dark and subtly disturbing film.

Anyone think that Oshii may have been inspired by Eraserhead, maybe in the same way that his Ghost in the Shell was inspired by Blade Runner?

If Eraserhead and 2001 had an anime baby, Angel's Egg would be the child. I like this more than Eraserhead, I can't really say what to think about Eraserhead but I love Angel's Egg. It's my favourite movie of all time.
