It seems the only outlet to see this film is through the web or bootleg DVDs. So just post in this thread if you would like to see an official release of the film in blue-ray. Probably won't help much but it's a start.
Considering that even in Japan this film is difficult to find and that it is a true cult classic, meaning absolutely no one has heard of it, the chances are ridiculously slim.
That's what I'm working on right now. Myself and a few other people are going to make an english dubbed version of this film and convince Manga entertainment or Bandai to release it on DVD.
Convince Manga Entertainment or Bandai to release it on DVD?
Haha.
Hahahaha.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Ha.
Good luck with that. These aren't the companies to go to to get something like this released: they're too mainstream and Angel's Egg is a very... non-mainstream film. Hell, I'm flabbergasted that Bandai's even releasing something like "Turn A Gundam", which is a part of a very popular franchise (it's still ten years old and American anime fans are notorious for not liking anything "old"). That's about as far as they go. Bandai used to have the "Honneamise" label that would release stuff like, well, Wings of Honneamise and the Patlabor movies and we all know how that turned out profits-wise. Because the main deciding factor in whether to distribute an anime outside of Japan is profit. Sad, but true... especially in today's economic climate.
And I don't know if I would want Manga Entertainment to release this movie anyway, all of the DVDs I've ever bought from them have sucked, quality-wise. End of Evangelion was non-anamorphic and looked... fuzzy? They've always botched Castle of Cagliostro in some way or other and "Macross II" was just... well, let me say this: why even edit a six episode OVA ito a movie if you're going to keep the episode title screens? Of all the DVDs I have ever bought from them, only Ghost in the Shell was decent, and that's because it's the jewel in their crown, considering a)it's very popular and b)they forked over cash and helped produce the thing in the first place.
Whew!
Anyway, you're probably better off asking someone like Animeigo or another company known for their more esoteric stuff, like maybe Nozomi/Right Stuff (if they were willing to release Toward the Terra....).
Or you can do what I did a few months ago and email Criterion, seeing as this is right up their alley film-wise (I suggested both this movie and Robot Carnival). They haven't released any anime titles since their Laserdisc release of Akira many moons ago so I don't know whether they would be receptive or not. I never got an email back. But maybe if enough people email them they'll do it, after all they have a separate suggestions email address.
Good Luck (and I mean that!); Angel's Egg is a great film, and one of the most awesome (in the literal sense of the word) films I have ever seen, animated or not.
well ive only seen a dubbed version if i remember correctly, back in the 80's on British tv, is this the film that has the live action sequences with the man and the woman in the apocalyptic setting? mixed with the cartoon of the girl and the flying fish ?

Behold, a Blu-Ray is announced and can be pre-ordered in japan! Catalog Number is PCXE-50290 - JAN is 4988013428461 Label/Distributor: Pony Canyon Region Code: Region-free Release Date: 2013/08/21
While I am still happy to own this on LD twice, I'll be sure to pre-order this BD.
I can vouch for this transfer, it is quite good and very true to the source elements of the film. There is no way in hell a mainstream american anime licenser will touch this film. I would only dream if say criterion or some sort of art film company got the rights, but that seems very far off. Until then, I recommend tracking down the official Japanese blu ray, it's great.
A fan subtitled the Blu-Ray (not that it needs much in subbing). It's out there for any English speaking fans. i have it and it's really amazing. Audio visuals are mind blowingly good.
