My understanding is that they were going through tumultuous times in their private lives. For all we know, the show was their salvation. The one good thing that came out of it.
Are you suggesting they faced stress and abuse on set?
There could have been a conscious effort to not bond too much as it may reflect in the performance. The last thing they want to audience to see is a lack of friction between sibling characters since the whole point was their rivalry.
Labeouf seems to me to just be a better, more driven self-promoter. For celebrity to occur, it doesn’t just take skills in performance, it takes business-savvy as well. Otherwise, you’re stuck doing off-Broadway stuff. Perhaps he’s smarter than Romano, or had a better agent/manager with sound advice.
That advice was probably this:
It’s your first big role, and it’s a hit. But the worst thing that can be done now is to tie yourself to another actor for life. You’ll end up doing reunion shows and throwbacks with her forever. He had to leave Romano in the dust for the sake of his career.
