Keanu's role was supposed to be a cameo?

I still dont get how this film would have worked if Keanu's role was only supposed to be a small one. I mean the film is centered around his character so how would it work if it was a cameo?

I dont blame Keanu for not promoting it though. That director really screwed him over with the contract and to make matters worse Keanu's personal life (the one thing that probably kept him going throughout filming) was about to hit a very tragic peak.

Maybe the director realised that it wouldn't work if Keanu's role was tiny. I think it could have. They could have suggested the fear and suspense without showing much of Keanu. Like films (cannot think of example at the moment) where we only see the scary monster at the end, but which work because of the power of suggestion ...

a good example that has escaped you would be Se7en with Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman considering you don't get to see the killers face till the last 15 minutes of the film, but it worked because of the graphic nature of his murders, kevin spacey was almost insignificant compared to the visuals that were presented to us with the crime scenes that were almost works of twisted art. While it was a driving force in that movie it wouldnt have had the same effect in this film
