I was wondering if anyone knows if Earl and his crew in the movie are based on the real-life Aryan Brotherhood, because I vaguely remember Steve Buscemi's character referring to them as the "Brotherhood".
The movie is very loosely based on the Alice Baker boys. Bunker did alot of time and knew inmates from the AB, Mexican Mafia and BGF. But the AB WOULD NEVER ALLOW Blacks or Mexicans to join.
Who are the Alice Baker boys??? Never heard of em.
As for the Aryan Brotherhood having Mexican members, I'm pretty sure the AB and Mexican Mafia are allies, mainly through their shared hatred of blacks. And i've heard of Mexicans as well as even Native Americans belonging to the AB.
The Alice Baker boys and the Brand are nicknames for the AB. And thers is no way in hell the AB has non-whites. The AB even put a greenlight on the NLR because they were allowing members of mixed white/hispanic heritage to join.
"the AB also includes some non-white members, and they work actively with non-white gangs such as the Mexican Mafia: LA EME (Chicanos from southern California)."
"The AB is believed by some to have connections to Aryan Nations, a neo-Nazi organization that follows a religious ideology known as Christian Identity. This claim is disputed by many and in fact it has been noted that the AB is often at odds with the various supremacist/Identity groups over issues of drug dealing and other criminal activity as well as the concept of White supremacy itself. Note the close connections between the AB and the Southern Mexican Gangs. The Ab is a criminal prison gang and not a political/religous one, like the Identity gorups. However, in some areas, AB's are said to be using the neo-pagan religion, Odinism, as part of their gang activities."
The Aryan Brotherhood (AB) originated in San Quentin prison in 1967. Originally, this gang was established to provide protection for White individuals from Black and Hispanic groups, most specifically the Mexican Mafia. Some of the original members of the AB migrated from a 1950s gang known as the "Bluebirds." Other names used in the past were the "Diamond Tooth Gang" and the "Nazi Gang."
Although members of the AB ordinarily wear numerous tattoos, the true AB tattoo is a shamrock, the letters AB, and three sixes. Three sixes displayed alone are not AB-specific because they are used by several other gangs. Only members of the AB are permitted to wear the "brand" of the gang; individuals found to be wearing the tattoo without consent of the AB are subject to murder. The AB has discouraged newer members from displaying AB specific tattoos to avoid identification from law enforcement officials. As a result, some AB members have removed or disguised their AB tattoos.
Although the Brotherhood is a White supremacist organization, for most AB members crime is their number priority and racial hatred would be a secondary goal, while the true White supremacist’s number one goal is generally racial hatred which they may or may not achieve through criminal behavior. Since 1972, the Aryan Brotherhood has had an alliance with the Mexican Mafia. The AB has also used the Odinist religion to conduct gang meetings and disguise illicit business practices. Older AB members learned the American Sign Language to communicate covertly.
Although the AB originated in California, it has spread throughout the nation and in the federal prison system. The leadership of the AB was recently hit with a federal R.I.C.O. indictment. Although the leadership has been disrupted, law enforcement officials expect that the gang will maintain a low-profile and will continue to contract out their criminal activity to such groups as the Nazi Lowriders and Peni (Public Enemy Number One).
Actually Tommy Silverstein is not the one with the star of david tattooed on him, and tommy is infact not jewish. His mother married a man after Tommy was born named Silverstein and changed Tommy's last name.
You're probably thinking of Tyler Bingham, who has a star of david tattoo. The AB is all white as far as membership but they have various allies.

I am pretty sure they are non-pure Whites in the Aryan Brotherhood although they won't achieve high level seniority. There have been Hispanics who have joined the AB but have to be more European than Latin. It is true that the AB and LA EME share the same enemy, the Blacks, but the Surenos are enemies with the Nothern Hispanics (Nortenos) who are mostly immigrants and were looked down upon by the Surenos who were second generation Americans.
But to agree with some others, economics comes before race. It's all about money than racial pride.
I think it's more about protection than economics. Sure, drug dealing is involved and guys get paid, but the vast majority of members aren't going to see a piece of this. If you don't have a gang behind you you're easy pickings in any maximum penitentiary. When there are repercussions for messing with you then you become a lot safer, simple as that for most guys. I'm pretty confident that well less than 20% of prison gang members see actual profits from any criminal enterprise.
another well known AB member of mixed race is Michael Thompson who is of white/native american background. even the mexican mafia has white members, Joe "Pegleg" Morgan was one of the most powerful members.
