can you name a wider range?

ok folks, i challenge each and every one of you...

name the actor and the two roles that are a more extreme opposite than that of Ben Kingsley's performance in Sexy Beast compared to his role in Gandhi.

this post may have no replies because this is tough to beat...

Heath Ledger.

The Dark Knight - A Knights Tale/Brokeback Mountain

Why So Serious?

reply

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Russel Crowe: Invincible in Gladiator, wishy-washy in The Insider. It doesn't strictly have the range of Kingsley's achievement, but he did shoot the two films very close to each other. Kingsley (and Daniel Day-Lewis') contrasting roles are spread over decades.

Gary Oldman

Gary Oldman - Stansfield in Leon TO Jim Gordon in the new Batman films.

Robert Duvall - Tom Hagen in The Godfather TO Bill Kilgore in Apocalypse Now

A man is basically as faithful as his options

reply

Maybe equally extreme:

Sam Jackson- "Fresh" to "Pulp Fiction"/"Jackie Brown"

Geoffery Wright- "Shaft" to "Manchurian Candidate"

Toshiro Mifune- "Rashamon"/"Seven Samurai" to "Musashi"/"Yojimbo"

Harvey Keitel- "Bad Lieutenant" to "From Dusk till Dawn"

Larry Fishburn- "King of New York" to "Higher Learning"

And the DDL and Deniro examples.

reply

gary oldman hands down...biggest extremes - Drexl Spivvy in true romance, a jive talking wannabe negro to commissioner gordon in the batman reboots.. the man is simply not given enough recognition!

reply

No doubt, Ben Kingsley is a phenomenal actor. I think these might come close, though (I'm sure a few have been mentioned before, but what the hey):

Sean Penn - Casualties of War/Mystic River - I Am Sam/Milk

Edward Norton - Primal Fear - American History X

Heath Ledger - Brokeback Mountain - The Dark Knight

Ralph Feinnes - Red Dragon/Schindler's List - Quiz Show/The English Patient

Kevin Spacey - Se7en/The Usual Suspects - Beyond the Sea/K-PAX

Daniel Day Lewis - My Left Foot - There Will Be Blood

There can't be a "correct" answer to a subjective question, but you could argue there is as much difference in style and range between Sir Ben as Don Logan and his role in Schindler's List.

Biggest difference between 2 roles:

Henry Fonda in 12 Angry Men vs. Henry Fonda in Once Upon a Time in the West

reply

Brendan Gleeson in Dark Blue and The Grand Seduction. He's amazing in everything I've seen, but I especially love him in In Bruges.
