The boards for each movie tends to be visited mostly by fans of it, so it's no wonder that most of the replies to this post have been positive towards MEN OF HONOR.
Although I think the movie is okay, and that it's certainly justifiable because the history of Carl Brashear is important, it is by no means a classic whatsoever. That some of you have it on your personal top-10's doesn't mean that it has a place on the top-250. And DeNiro's performance is by no means near his performance in CASINO. His character in MEN OF HONOR does not have as many dimensions, and his over-all performance is over the top. In CASINO he also has a larger-than-life approach to his role, but it works because of the setup of the rest of CASINO.
That's the whole problem with MEN OF HONOR: the over-acting, the sentimentalism and the over-dramatising makes it feel cheesy (to use the words of another poster, although I don't like the term). It could gain a lot from the art of implying instead of painting with these big brushes, as if the audience are not smart enough to figure out who are the bad guys themselves. But then again, I generally hate movies that under-rate their audiences, so I actually think I'm being more than fair to MEN OF HONOR Currently it has 6.6 rating and I think that's quite fair.
There are movies out there a lot more artistically satisfying that deserve spots on the top-250 first such as LA STRADA (ita), VREDENS DAG (DK), ZERKALO (rus), HÄXAN (DK) (1922 version), SKAMMEN (swe), BARRY LYNDON (US) etc. We don't need a standard Hollywood blockbuster fill up another spot...
