One line

I didn't watch this whole movie.
I entered in the middle, with the scene where Cuba and Robert DeNiro do that breath-holding contest, and left when Cuba stated he wanted his leg amputated.
I was expecting Family Guy.

But, anyways, there was one line in the scene, where you could tell that Cuba's character loved diving.
It was where Cuba's wife said:
"And then one day you'll be able to walk again. With a cane."
And then Cuba turned to look at her and said in the purest voice,
"Can I still dive?"

The way he said it made him sound like a five year old with an ambition to dive.
It was cute.
It was moving.

I'm taking up thread space, I know.
But I just wanted to know if anyone else agrees with me?
Or if they have other favourite memorable lines from the movie.

my favourite line that always sticks with me from high school to college right now has to be when De Niros smashing up everything of cuba's including his radio thing.. and when he's about to smash his photo of his father Cuba says...

Carl: HEYYYY!!!!!
Billy Sunday: What the hell did he ever say to make you try so hard?
Carl Brashear: Be the best.................(this part where he pauses for a bit then says "be the best" made me think of his late fathers dreams for his son...)

it was a little cheesy but it was also very meaningful.....

i live by this motto now..............

reply

i agree.. both of those lines were real good

The line that sticks with me because it's so sad is when the father tells the son not to grow up to be like him.

reply

yeah i found that line really sad as well.........and then you see the son helping his father and growing up into cuba gooding jnr.

its also very sad when carl phones home and hears about his fathers death.....

in fact the whole film is full of emotional bits..........

I thought the remark that Carl made in the scene where he confronts Billy Sunday in the barracks and says to Sunday at one point "without diving you're nothing" was a very powerful and poignant one as it hit a raw nerve with Sunday's tortured soul and the way De Niro expressed his character's bitterness in this scene was superb. In this scene we also see the first glimpse of respect that Sunday has for Carl when Sunday, still in an emotional state, says to Carl "well you are" (the best).

reply

JO: WHY DO YOU WANT THIS SO BADLY?

CARL: BECAUSE THEY TOLD ME I COULDN'T HAVE IT

LOL LOVE IT

reply

This line is so perfect!!!
"Because they told me I couldn't have it"!! I love it so much... and for the movie and for Brashear's life and for others like him, it makes so much since...
