I thought that Charlize Thereon (Gwen Sunday) told Cuba Gooding Jr. (Carl Brashear)that she was his daughter. At the party she said she was his wife and then at the hospital I believe they said she was his wife.

I'm quite sure that she is his wife. In the first scene with Carl and Gwen, she says she's Gwen.... Sunday. I took this as being her being his wife. At the party you're talking about, she says wife, but that annoying "Lewtanant Commaiiiinder" guy assumes she's his daughter incorrectly. Plus, when She's talking to Sunday at the rehab place, she is talking about how he better smarten up or she is leaving him. There are also other scenes where Sunday gets mad at her for "being with every man in town" at the bar, and after she gets drunk and crashes the car, he says, 'lets go home,' which suggests they live together in a non family context. Finally, she kisses and touches him in a manner that suggests a husband-wife relationship.
