What happened to the dog? I'm a pug lover with 2 at home, and if it is as bad as you say, then I'm glad they kept it out of the theatrical release.

Lye is a caustic solution, rich in potassium carbonate (potash), used for glass and soap making.
I think there was a scene using lie in Fight Club as well
