Actually there are several ways to decide how large a battle is. Both Jutland and Leyte (and some others) hold the 'largest sea battle' title using the varied methods.

Jutland (1916)only counts as the largest in terms of TONNAGE ENGAGED (as in, the battle ships actually get to shoot each other)

Phillipine Sea (1944) was the largest involving aircraft at sea.

Leyte gulf (1944) is considered a series of battles by many, so therefore may not be classified as the largest single battle by certain standards. But as far as Tonnage involved, its the tops
