Why did De Niro look beaten up at the beginning?

And what was he and 2 other sailors doing in some terminal building, looked like a train station or something? I know it was a flash back scene but i didn't think it was explained later on.

And another thing that comes to mind is why he is in Charleston, SC? i noticed that they were in handcuffs so my bet is that they were going to the brig? There is a consolidated brig here in NWS Charleston.

My guess is he went on a drunken bender and got into a fight with some Marines (as one of the Shore Patrol said) and the SPs were taking him to the brig/Captain's mast.

i know thi answer but can not remember it. if i remember right it was mentioned in the deleted scenes. if i remember right De Niro was hating his life and where he was working and for some reason was fighting 3 men in the navy. i could have sworn it was the men that were sitting next to him in the chair while he was watching tv.

i know its in the deleted scenes. they took alot of de niros stuff out because the movie is not supposed to be about him.

there was another ending that had de niro jumping off a bride to save a little kid that was drowning and he saved the kid but ended up drowning himself

Maybe DeNiro was beaten up by the groom.

I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, "... I drank what?"
