I Stole The PUG!!

There are several threads posted here with people discussing this scene, saying how funny it is but they think he's saying; "I stole the pie or I stole the pot."
He's actually chanting "I stole the PUG", while banging pans, I believe his pants were down too.

It's a scene happening in the background when Carl Brashear arrives at the base.
I don't know if he was the actual guy that took the dog but he's taking the punishment for the guys stealing the CO's dog, a PUG.

This was a typical punishment for that type of thing (military pranks) it wasn't sanctioned by the Navy but it had a dual purpose; #1. It was embarrassing and #2. It was usually done early in the morning, waking everyone up so the guys buddies would all be ticked at him too.

Anyway- He's chanting "I stole the PUG."

I thought he was saying PIE...not sure but now you have put doubt in my head. Damn you sir, damn you!

"Vive la mort, vive la guerre, vive le sacre mercenaire."

Pretty sure it's "pie". You steal an officer's dog and you're going to be doing a whole lot more than banging a pot. And there's ALWAYS one idiot trying to smuggle food out of the mess hall.

It sounds to me like he's saying "I stole a pot" hence why he's banging on it.

The captions on the movie quite clearly say "I stole a pie! I stole a pie!"

It is pie.

I NEVER trust the subtitles, more so where the dialogue cannot be clearly heard.

I think pie makes the most sense.

I have no idea why someone would know this unless they were a Navy diver?

But it sounds reasonable.

I think the scene with the pug is that was how the dog got to do his "do do". I'm sure as much of a germaphobe (sp) that Col Poppy was, no dog poo'd in his living quarters. The dog was lowered via a pail and then someone would walk him and then send him back up via a pail.
