A breath holding competition without taking a single deep breath?!!!!!!

Anyone who practices diving with apnea (swimming with no air tank) can tell you NOBODY does it before warming up their lungs and taking several deep slow (no hyperventilating) breaths, as many as 40 before your first attempt.

So watching these guys go at it in the bar without even taking one single deep breath (you see them clearly all serious holding still and apparently not even breathing at the moment the water rises to cover their faces), is simply beyond stupid. NO ONE can hold their breath that way for 5 minutes, heck not even one (I can hold it for 4, but only after 2 warmup attempts without any air in my lungs, which take like 8 minutes overall).

Why not just make them float in the air while they are at it?

I thought that was odd as well.

Good, I thought I was the only one. I mean even a kid should find that absurd (they looked more concerned about posing still for a picture than actually getting ready to hold their breath for several minutes).

And never mind the fact that both of them (at least De Niro) are wasted at that point (drunk), yeah that's gonna help...

Al66, I understand what you're saying but it would probably be wasted time in a movie. That would be boring (but realistic ) to watch them do the proper warm ups. You already have the emotional build up of cookie going to the whites only bar (the moor bar, of ALL names to give it). The tension of his wife being there, and then, of all people chicken *beep* hoyt telling cookie "you don't belong here".

Yeah, makes sense to warm up, but for the plot and movies sake, get on with the challenge

Exactly. That would be damn near 3 cans of 400' film. So artistically and financially it would be bad to put all that in. It would make for a great entry under the "goofs" section...

I thought the scene was probably the dumbest part of the whole movie (which is saying something).

Why would lung capacity be some sort of measure of manhood or skill? It's a completely genetic characteristic.

Might as well have a vision contest while they're at it to REALLY prove who's better!
