Butch Cassidy + the Sundance Kid connection

I have not watched this movie but as soon as I saw the names of the two lead characters -- Mr. Parker and Mr. Longbaugh -- I thought of the two famous outlaws. Butch Cassidy was the alias for Robert Leroy Parker, and the Sundance Kid was the alias for Harry Longabaugh (sometimes misspelled by historians as Longbaugh). After I read at one of the message board topics that there was a shootout at the end of the movie and that it wasn't clear whether or not Parker and Longbaugh died then I knew that the Newman/Redford movie and the real and/or fictional accounts of Cassidy & the Kid provided some inspiration for "The Way of the Gun".

I thought of Butch & Sundance when I saw the final location.
It looks very much like the end of the great Redford/Newman film.

I was born in the house my father built

This film is full of homages. Yes, Parker and Longbaugh reference Butch and Sundance.

The following is from the Blu-ray release review from DVDtown:
"The movie starts with a simple kidnap plot; then as it progresses, it is hard not see references to other directors. In the hospital scene, for instance, one can draw parallels to John Woo´s "Hard Boiled" (1992), and the final act of the movie references the styles of Sam Peckinpah and George Roy Hill. On the genre side, "The Way of the Gun" tries to be the Hollywood bullet ballet, a genre popularized by John Woo´s action films, where characters overuse guns more than any other weapon. It´s the final showdown where the movie switches gears from a bullet-ballet crime thriller to a Western movie."

I agree with what the reviewer says here except for the tone. He or she is very dismissive of this excellent little gem that only gets better with repeated viewings. I, however, am a big fan.

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."
