Why were characters intimidated by Jeffers?

Jeffers humiliates Hale Chidduck's son, right in front of him and Hale lets it happen.Nicky Katt's character grovels and everyone but Sarno panders to him.
What was Taye Diggs doing in that movie anyway...I can think of 20 young super character actors who would have NAILED that role.
I gave the movie a 10 regardless.

I thought Diggs did an amazing job. He's a very underused actor. He's also got a great look for the part - a robot like killer - one goal, one reseason for being. I'd say that he "nailed" the role.

But I'm confused by your question - do you take issue with the casting or the story.

If it's the former - then I hope I've answered your question.

If the later: Chidduck isn't afraid of Jeffers, he just sees no reason to step in, he probably agrees with Jeffers and it's rememer the moment right before "take your hand away from your pocket." Chidduck treats his boy almost te exact same way.

He's also the films most violent and ruthless character (and in a way the main antagonist) I mean... he's THE bad guy... and he's really good with a gun... so... yeah.

Agree that Diggs did a great job. He was the embodiment of the stoically ruthless small time hood. I don't remember Obecks groveling to him. They're equals in ruthlessness and violent intent.

As for Chidduck's attitude toward the two bodyguards, he employs ruthless young men to do whatever it takes. He has wild animals on a loose leash and he knows not to pull on the leash, even he had wanted to, which he never shows any desire to do. I think they amuse him.

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."
