Will McQuarrie Ever Direct again?
he should. He's quite good at it.
I could die right now, Clem. I'm just... happy. I've never felt that before.

I have to say I gave the movie 10 stars. As I sat and thought about it, I tried in vain to understand why I rated it this high. Yes, it was a very good movie and all, but why a 10? As I thought about it more and more and watch a few clips of it, it was the Music stupid I thought to myself. The entire soundtrack enhances every bit of the movie music is playing in the background. McQuarrie does us all a disservice if he doesn't continue writing movie scripts like this one. He will further add to cheating us only if he doesn't employ a music soundtrack or say other artists songs in each movie he writes or directs. I could watch this movie over and over and over and not get bored. But if it wasn't for the music I highly doubt I would feel this way even now.
Another movie that did this for me was "Memento." The movie was excellent but I felt again, the music sold me on watching it.
The real question is whether he wants to direct again.
What attracted me to this film and holds me still is the smart dialogue and the winding plot during which nothing is handed to us. We are treated almost like collaborators, but certainly as intelligent people.
"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."
aGuiltySoul, your post is very insightful and rings true for me. Dialogue and plot can take what could be a terrible movie and make it much better. With this movie, the premise was great because of McQuarrie's abilities.
shareAnd I think the real, real reason is that the movie bombed at the box office, and as they say, "all that counts is the last film you made", so I think he will probably have a hard time finding producers for the material he wishes to direct.
It must be added that the critics reception for the film was also lukewarm, which I find surprising -- for all it's rough edges it's still a diamond. I prefer a rough diamond to a flawless crystal any day.
If you listen to his interview on the creative screenwriting podcast he sounds like he's still looking for the opportunity to direct again.
This movie put him in "Directors jail" is the way he put it and he's looking for a chance to do a movie which will get him out.
