ones back fire, threes gun play

what does this mean?????

1. Great quote from James Caan
2. No one's going to wonder about one shot.
3. "Bang! Bang! Bang!" will bring out the locals to investigate.

As has been proven, in real life, by countless police reports all around the world--especially in urban areas--peeps will "dismiss" or go into denial at the sound of a single gunshot, UNLESS of course they actually SEE the gun in question, or there's an obvious bullet impact near them. It "might be" so many other things... fireworks, engine backfiring, large object dropped, etc.

But THREE such loud reports, in rapid succession, narrows the options.

Also consider:

a) Most peeps--having never fired one--don't know what real firearms sound like, only duh TV kind, lol;

b) OTOH, in a world with fewer and fewer carbureted vehicles, most don't know what a backfiring engine sounds like either, so maybe they'll start ASSuming "gunplay" more and more... oh, the irony.

Good points. Especially about backfires. On a side note, when I was in the Philippines few years back the huge number of motorcycles in ill-repair would often backfire. At times it would sound like a firefight across the city I was in. Made me jumpy at first because I wasn't used to it.

I would add guns make different type reports. And yeah, when I was growing up my old man said never fire more than three times if you do not wish to be found. But three shots if that is your goal.

What I liked about that line was it implied quite clearly that he'd return fire if shot.

Don't trust reality. After all, it's only a collective hunch.

What the hell, was your dad teaching you how to go all DC sniper?

reply

Heh. Not quite. But he was a career military vet of 3 wars, WW2, Korea and Vietnam. So naturally his life lessons tended to come from that. Even when he didn't really want it to.
