Russian Roulette scene

Why was Geoffrey Lewis's character playing Russion Roulette with himself? Did I completely miss something?

reply

No. It was completely random and pointless. Crap film.

Pleb.

reply

What the *beep* is a pleb? Never mind, I'll google it

reply

He misspelled it. It's "plebe" as in "plebian," from the Latin for commoner.

He misspelled it. It's "plebe" as in "plebian," from the Latin for commoner. At the US Naval Academy, they use the term derogatorily to refer to first year midshipmen.

Why bother with someone so stupid?

He was attempting suicide. That's why it's funny when he stops to answer the phone.

It also explains why he's eager to go in and get the girl despite Joe's warning. He's still drunk when they get to the motel, combine that with his suicidal mentality and Abner don't give a hoot.

"We can go in there right, just the 2 of them..." He slurs his words there.

I'd love to see you in the moonlight with your head thrown back and your body on fire.

Yes, it occurs to Abner that he can die with his boots on, as it were, when he gets that call.

I liked the scene. It added dark humor, some real insight to this character and was definitely original. (It was also funny to see he was about the sixth choice on Caan's list.)

I also liked his scene at the end with James Caan. You can sense Caan's character is itching to leave but feels obligated to stay with Geoffery Lewis' character out of respect, only then to be asked to leave. I thought it was subtly hilarious and handled well by two old pros.

No doubt. This film is full of gems, scenes one can watch over and over, and that is one of them. Dialogue is endlessly quotable too.

So well done.

I think what he was doing should be called "American Roulette". It was even more hardcore than Russian Roulette.
