What happened to Doc?

First, let me say that I haven't seen a single episode of TW since it went off the air, AND toward the end I had become more of a casual viewer. Something about that last season...I don't know, I just lost interest for some reason.

With all that said, I wonder if someone can fill me in on what happened to Doc. Just give me a summarized rundown on what happened with him. I have a vague recollection of him being in some sort of facility...I really don't recall if it was a psych ward or what, but something. I'd appreciate a summary of his story arc at the end.

The new FD boss was trying to squeeze the paramedics out so doc took the firehouse hostage with a gun and shot the new boss.

That's the truth from what I recall. It's been about ten years since I watched TW so may have been some details I missed. I remember sully walked doc out and Doc said "Well I guess they won't be shutting this house down anymore" or something along those lines.

Okay, thanks.  I knew I had pretty much zoned out toward the end of the series--really, that entire final season--but I'm not sure HOW I missed that! 

This is correct. Doc shot the new captain because he had a reputation of closing down firehouses. He was going to hold the entire house hostage the length of time it would a paramedic from a different station to reach the neighborhood if the station was closed. Sully comes in and talks with him and we find out that the reason that he took these actions is because of all the painful events in his past (one of which is that he blames himself for Alex Taylor's death) and PTSD from 9/11. It was revealed in the final episode when Carlos goes to visit him that he is in Bellevue psychiatric center.
