Any news on the remaining DVD releases ?

I loved what I saw of the show when it was first on, but never actually saw every episode. I was thinking of buying the first two season, but what's the point if they never release any more ? Any news ?

The delay in the other seasons is due to the music license fees. I believe season 2 had some of the orginal music replaced with generic music.

reply

i realy can´t understand it: other shows have lots of different musictitles as well and they came out - what´s the matter with this one?

I'm pissed off that this and NYPD blue aren't being released.

Given that season 3 was the season that started right after 9/11, I think it is a shame that they didn't do enough to get it released for the tenth anniversary, but hey, maybe for the twentyfifth. Even if Chicago Fire runs as long as ER, I think we will have its final season on whatever media is standard at the time before we see the next season of Third Watch released.

reply

NYPD BLUE has seasons 1-5 on Vudu...a streaming service offered by Walmart. Seasons 2-5 are $17.99 for and season 1 is $14.99. That's over 100 episodes.

reply

This has happened many times. The copyright owners want such outrageous fees for the music rights that a lot of great old series will never be released. They would rather not sell them at all than at a price that make a DVD release profitable. When "Married With Children" was released most seasons had an instrumental theme song instead of Frank Sinatra's "Love and Marriage" because the royalties were too expensive. This song was around 50 years old at the time! Sad part of it is very little of the royalties that are collected ever go to the artists or their heirs. Many great artists of my generation that made millions for the big label companies died in poverty and their families had to sue to ever get any of the money.

reply

It's why some of these older shows should be released as complete box sets in smaller quantities. They want to milk every dollar out of fans by releasing them individually, but who wants to wait a year or two for each season to be released? Especially for an old show? I did purchase the first two seasons, but I would have rather paid for an entire box set.

I'm really disappointed that Fox only released one season of The Practice. This is another show I'd gladly have purchased in a box set.

reply

I agree with you up to a certain point. For shows to be released in a complete box set makes sense for older shows that have ended before the start of DVD sets, but doesn't work for current series until they end, and some series have a long run like ER, which ran 15 seasons. I do resent the companies that actually split seasons into halves. That is really pathetic and obviously, as you said about full season sets, just a way to milk it.

reply

I tried contacting WB about this, and did not get a response. I sent a shorter message stating that I now know to not expect a response, but that my next WB purchase would be Third Watch season 3.

reply

So if all seasons of ER can be released, even though it started 5 years before Third Watch, what is the big problem with the music? Both are WB, I just find this crazy!

I've never seen seasons 2,3 and 4 because I didn't get into the show until season 5 and then borrowed the season 1 dvd years later when it was released. I can't believe they've only got around to season 2 so far.

reply

Hey guys.

I spoke to WB in Australia and they gave me this response:

HI ******

No unfortunately we do not have rights to any further seasons, thus do not have plans to release any others.

You may be interested in Southland, which is a similar type of series. We are releasing Season 1 and 2 in April.

Thank you

I wish they'd release the rest -_-.

NYPD Blue Season 5 has supposedly been coming for years. At this point, I wouldn't ever expect it.

There may be hope on the horizon - Warner and Sony are startting to release a lot of the older stuff, through the MOD scheme!! (Made on Demand)
Without A Trace season 6, is about to be released like this in the US, and a few other titles, that had the first few seasons released years ago (Party of Five & Growing Pains) are also being MOD.

So maybe, hopefully (fingers crossed) down the track we see them do this with the remaining seasons of Third Watch.

Maybe contacting those who hold the rights and seeing if they do plan on MOD'ing it would be an idea?!
Not sure myself who to contact about this over in the US!! (Live in Australia)

If anyone got any ideas, let me know and I will start a campaign to get it on MOD!!

The original froot loop, since the 1980's!!

reply

I'm sure Warner Brothers would be all over this (or just digital releases), but their thing has been the music licensing issue.

Can't they just remove the songs that are the problem?

I know, right?! Just play a little harmonica in it's place and give us our dvds!

They already did that to "Southland", so you'd think it'd be a no-brainer of a quickie answer.

"Give me a name!"
"Weren't your parents supposed to do that?"

reply

I'm surprised that they did that for Southland. You would've figured in this day and age they would've covered that by now.

I would indeed think. But it's a double-edged sword: wait (possibly years, in the case of "Third Watch") for home video release with original music intact, or accept a quickie release with altered music.

In the case of "Southland", I had the final season on DVR and used Netflix to catch up. The altered music bothered me (though there's less there than on "Third Watch"), but I got to see the rest of the show before watching the end. Give-and-take. Ideal? Hell, no, but I didn't have to wait years for the whole series.

Someone said the streaming version of "Freaks and Geeks" on Netflix uses different music (the discs have the original broadcast songs). That's adding an extra layer of crazy to the issue.

The miracle is "Miami Vice". It's on DVD, with every song that aired in the '80s. Universal did the seemingly impossible to accomplish that. I just wish it wasn't so hard to expect it as a consumer.

Of course, Betty, it's absurd. Putting the Amish in glass cases would be inhumane.

reply

I've never seen an episode of Miami Vice, so I'm just guessing here, but was the music done by the original artists, or a cover band like Knight Rider did?

All original. Phil Collins, U2, Duran Duran, Mr. Mister, Mark Knopfler .... all of 'em.

Okay, what would Joe do at a time like this? He'd kill everybody and smoke some cigarettes.

There are people that recorded the entire series when it was in syndication on A&E and have put it online just search on google for third watch episodes to watch. That's how I watched the entire series. I never saw it when it was on air so I googled and sat and watched the free online episodes on my laptop. Hope this helps. Also music licensing its not a rare thing many series have either not been released or they change the entire theme song like on Netflix charmed and Dawson's creek both don't have their original theme songs due to music licensing issues charmed went with a generic instrumental and Dawson's creek uses a different song all together instead of the "I don't want wait for our lives to be over....." Sucks but it happens when people get greedy

I'm surprised no one has thought to just copy all the eps onto dvds and put them on a well known auction site to sell to fellow fans!

They'd earn a fortune that Warner are too stupid to pocket!

> I'm surprised no one has thought to just copy all the eps onto dvds and put them on a well known auction site to sell to fellow fans!

For the simple reason they would soon get banned from selling due to one reason only, copyright ! Certainly on eday anyway

BUT for anyone wanting DVD's of any season I can help out with this. PM me

reply

Well if you look around online you'll find some online retailers that sell the entire series, and yes they are just episodes recorded and burned onto discs with printed artwork on the boxes.

It's kind of a slap in the face that viewers would get charged if they dare to try and get the show because they have it copyrighted, but at the same time the studio won't release it so we can't buy them legitimately.

reply

Feel free to name-check these 'online retailers' that sell every series then please. Because I certainly can't find any.
